Season of Emancipation kicks off

The Season of Emancipation officially began on Friday with a series of pop-up events across the island.

Under the theme Reimagining the Past, Celebrating the Future, the Division of Culture in the Prime Minister’s Office in association with the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) hosted the activities not only in recognition of the start of the season but also to mark the anniversary of the 1816 Bussa Rebellion.

They started off with rhythmic performances from the Haynesville Youth Group along with visual pieces by artists Von Hall and Shanika Grimes on the Trents Playing Field in Holetown, St James around 11 a.m.

Other pop-up events were held at the Oistins Bay Gardens, Christ Church and Emerald City Car Park in Six Roads, St Phillip with the final showcase occurring in Golden Square Freedom Park in Bridgetown, which saw the Barbados Community Folk Chorale and the St Leonard’s Boys’ School Steel Orchestra performing folk and calypso music.

Speaking after the last performance in the capital city, music officer at the NCF Kevin Moore said the agency expected the public to come out in large numbers for the upcoming events given the significance of the season.

“I expect a major turnout for all events. We are focusing on having a lot of events and recognition for the special days within this season so that Barbadians become aware of our heritage and chart a path based on [that],” he said, adding that local artists will also be given a chance to showcase their talent.

“Generally, the NCF is the foremost producer of artistic work in Barbados and we will continue to put artists at the forefront of our duties, ensuring that they will get as many opportunities as possible, within and outside of Barbados.”

The next major date on the Season of Emancipation calendar is April 28, National Heroes Day. A host of activities will be held from April 17 to April 30 in all 11 parishes to pay tribute to the 11 National Heroes. (SB)
