Job description: Unity Health Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital site is an adult trauma centre, and a major international education and research institute. The role of the site Nursing Education Manager will appeal to a highly motivated individual who is passionate about excellence in nursing practice and patient care, and has a vision for evidence-informed education as a key strategy for achieving the best possible patient care.

As a key member of the Interprofessional Practice Portfolio, and reporting to the Senior Director, Nursing Practice and Education, the primary responsibility of the role of the St. Michael’s site Nursing Education Manager is to lead the development of innovative programs and approaches to continuous professional education and clinical and academic education for nurses and nursing students consistent with the Unity Health Toronto’s Corporate Strategic Plan, Interprofessional Strategic Plan and Corporate Education Strategic Plan. The Nursing Education Manager is a resource, advocate, facilitator and coordinator in matters of nursing professional practice and interprofessional education as they relate to education and knowledge translation.

The incumbent will achieve the desired results through activity in 3 main areas, including:

Development, implementation and evaluation of an innovative, sustainable corporate Nursing Education Program.

Development and management of all aspects of nursing student placements, including identifying and developing opportunities for innovative approaches to academic nursing student placements.

Promotion of a culture of continuous learning (such as orientation programs, mentorship programs, corporate nursing rounds, interprofessional education initiatives, among others) in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with other members of the Nursing and Health Disciplines team, nursing education team, clinical leaders and nurses to identify learning needs, and develop and evaluate strategies to meet these needs.
  • Develop, deliver and evaluate educational programs and interventions that promote excellence in nursing practice and patient-centered care through enhancement of nurses’ knowledge and skills.
  • Provide strategic and instrumental education leadership for SMH’s RNAO Best Practice Spotlight sustainability.
  • Act as an educator leader, role model and resource for other educators; engage clinical nurse educators, nurses and managers in creating and implementing the clinical education strategy/program at SMH.
  • Use educational, quality and patient safety strategies and approaches that are scholarly and evidence-informed.
  • Measure and audit the quality and outcomes of clinical nursing education.
  • Provide nursing education representation on corporate committees and task forces.
  • Establish effective working relationships with our key academic partners that foster excellence and innovation in nursing education and enhances the student experience at SMH.
  • Support the development, continual improvement and excellence of student placements and student evaluation strategies in collaboration with the Student Center.
  • Work collaboratively with Unity Health’s Corporate Nursing Education Manager and St. Joseph’s Nursing Education Manager on corporate education matters and initiatives spanning across Unity Health.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Nursing and/or Adult Education, required.
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Clinical appointment with a Faculty of Nursing or eligible for appointment.
  • Three(3) years’ previous nursing leadership or nursing educational leadership and professional practice experience preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ previous clinical nursing experience preferred
  • Advanced computer skills in a variety of software packages and applications with a sound approach to technology-assisted learning, e-learning and clinical simulation.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing IPE strategies.
  • Well developed knowledge and recent relevant experience in evidence-based curriculum development, delivery and evaluation.
  • Sound knowledge of the professional and regulatory environment that influences nursing practice and education.
  • Well-developed leadership competencies (negotiation, active listening, participative leadership style, ability to inspire others, articulate a vision for nursing education; delegation, influencing, goal setting, achievement oriented, coaching skills, etc).
  • Well-developed analytical skills; adept problem-solving skills; policy analysis and development capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, required.
  • Proven ability to be an effective team member and leader as appropriate to the circumstances with effective conflict resolution skills and the ability to forge effective partnerships.
  • Superior verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the Mission and Values of Unity Health Toronto.

Expected salary: $46.7 – 60.71 per hour
