Manchester City vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction after Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva goals

“We will fight until the end” Pep on title race with Arsenal

Manchester City hope to cut the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just two points when they host Newcastle United this afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s men trail by five points after a run of three consecutive victories for the Gunners has left them in charge of the title race. During that run, City dropped two points in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest but responded with a 4-1 hammering of Bournemouth. A further victory over Bristol City in the FA Cup has rebuilt confidence in the team and with Phil Foden firing once again the champions will be tough to deal today.

Newcastle may also be there for the taking. After an impressive start to the season Eddie Howe’s men are stumbling. They have won just one league game in seven and have fallen out of the top four. To add insult to injury Newcastle where also beaten by Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final and now must bounce back at the Etihad. Nick Pope will return after being suspended for that match and should provide some stability for the backline. Can Newcastle shock Guardiola’s men?

Full-time: Man City 2-0 Newcastle

90+4 mins: A last minute free kick sees Newcastle have the opportunity to score a consolation goal but Kieran Trippier’s shot lands safely in the hands of Ederson.

That’s the last kick of the game and City take the points. They stay second but move to within two points of Arsenal who take on Bournemouth at 3pm.

That defeat is only Newcastle’s third this season but it’s a big dint in their hopes of finishing in the top four this year.

Man City 2-0 Newcastle

73 mins: Here we go. Dan Burn and Jack Grealish come together before having words with each other. Rodri gives Burn a shove and it all kicks off.

Erling Haaland sprints over to square up with the big defender and both men end up getting yellow cards. That’s just an outpouring of frustration.

Haaland because he hasn’t scored, Burn because Newcastle are being outplayed.

Man City 2-0 Newcastle

70 mins: That second goal may just have killed off the game. Newcastle’s substitutions had started to bring the visitors back into the game but to get two goals back against City at home is a tricky task.

GOAL! Man City 2-0 Newcastle (Silva, 67’)⚽️

Manchester City double their lead and it’s the substitute Bernardo Silva who puts them ahead. The home side win the ball high up the pitch and feed it up to Jack Grealish.

He brings the ball to the edge of the box, squares it to Erling Haaland who flicks it on to Bernardo.

The midfielder touches it into the area then guides his shot past Nick Pope into the far bottom corner.
