The Catalyst Health Innovation Forum, launched by healthcare venture firm Novamed & the Visionaries’ Summit, will be virtually hosted and convene an audience of high-level stakeholders in the global healthcare space seeking to bring innovation and world-class healthcare into emerging markets. The forum has landed a high level partnership with the Inter American Development Bank spanning the Group including IDB Invest, as the organization seeks to help bolster the healthcare space in the region.
The event will be held virtually, March 3 & 4 from 9am – 2pm, engaging stakeholders from the private sector, government, media and academia as they explore leadership, innovations and opportunities in healthcare. The multi stakeholder event is being designed to bridge the divide between the most pressing problems in healthcare with potential entrepreneurs, investors and corporate entities poised to solve them. The event will serve as a space to connect with thought leaders, healthcare magnates and influencers, as it will offer Jamaican and international decision makers an environment to discuss projects that could drive economic transformation and growth through healthcare.
Healthcare is now a trending global topic as the Covid-19 pandemic exposed serious shortfalls in healthcare infrastructure around the world. In emerging markets in particular, healthcare is often seen as a government led or philanthropic field, unattractive to private sector players. This dynamic tends to cause significant deficits in a nation’s capacity to deliver high quality healthcare to its citizens. Business leaders are now trying to understand what recovery will look like and where are the greatest opportunities to get involved.
Launched by the entrepreneurial duo – Medical doctor & entrepreneur, Dr. David Walcott, and businessman, Kirk-Anthony Hamilton – this comes on the tailwind of several important key plays made by Novamed in emerging markets including investing in a PPE manufacturing line in China, partnering with the University Hospital of the West Indies to develop pool-testing and a recent MOU to transform medical education in the Caribbean.
“We’re driving a greater mandate to socialize the need for increased global collaboration in driving innovation and world-class healthcare in emerging markets” says Founder, Dr. David Walcott. “Catalyst is designed to spur progressive dialogue, particularly in emerging markets, about the need for investing in high-quality healthcare solutions and the opportunities that exist for the same” states Hamilton.
The duo has built a strong international track record for convening global building powerhouses to their discussions, Catalyst is clearly heading in the same direction.
The summit will feature business magnates and academic powerhouses such as Robert Kaplan – Harvard Business School Professor of Strategy & Value-Based Healthcare, and Inventor of the Balanced Scorecard – a renowned business tool used in business strategy.
Stanley Bergman, CEO of Henry Schein – the largest medical supplies company globally doing a whopping US$10B in revenue annually – will also participate and share thoughts. Regional leaders in healthcare, such as the Director of PAHO – Dr. Carissa Etienne. PAHO’s mission, which is “to strengthen national and local health systems and improve the health of the peoples of the Americas in collaboration with Ministries of Health and other stakeholders” brings a critical conversation as Dr. Etienne has been at the head of the decision-making table of healthcare policy in the region surrounding Covid. “We’re very excited to have Dr.
Etienne participate as PAHO has been instrumental in shaping Caribbean responses to Covid-19 and we welcome her contribution” states Walcott.

The conference will also host individuals such as Dr. Timothy Evans, the previous Senior Director of the Health, Nutrition and Population (HNP) Global Practice at the World Bank Group. Tim has re-oriented its multi-billion dollar investments in low- and middle-income countries around the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage. He was also the Assistant Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2003 to 2010, and was a was a founding board member of Gavi (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation), the organisation overseeing global Covid-19 vaccine distribution by the Covax facility with the World Health Organization.(PR)
