Reggae singer Gyptian has teamed up with Wray & Nephew US for its ‘WrayMixes’ campaign, which will help to provide assistance to veteran artistes who are in need.
Wray & Nephew US stated that the brand is “the spirit of Jamaica that proudly and loudly champions the music of the Caribbean”.
“As such we are proud to announce WrayMixes our enterprising platform that supports musicians from across the Caribbean diaspora by giving them high-profile brand opportunities when others won’t. To celebrate the launch of WrayMixes, we linked together renowned reggae artiste Gyptian and legendary streetwear label, Alife, to produce a limited capsule collection,” the company said. The limited capsule includes a hat and two shorts.
Half of the retail proceeds will go to a charity close to Gyptian’s heart, the V and P Family Foundation, an organisation supporting music education and providing access to underserved communities in the Jamaican diaspora. The artiste told THE STAR that it was an honour to be chosen to make a playlist of his favourite songs on Spotify while also getting the opportunity to design Gyptian/Wray merchandise for purchase.
“Proceeds from the sale will go to the V and P Foundation Artistes Compassionate Fund. As corporate citizens of the world, I am honoured to have the opportunity for this venture. I look forward to more future efforts to give back to our artistes who are in need to let them know they are not forgotten through VP Records’ Foundation. Big up to J Wray and Nephew, Ailfe Inc and VP Records,” Gyptian told THE STAR.
The singer was still on a high from last Friday’s event at the Jamaican Consulate in Manhattan, where he was one of two musicians receiving a Heritage Award.
Informing his followers of the partnership recently, Gyptian was clothed in a pair of shorts from the collection, as well as one of the caps.
“This is no ordinary collab with half of the proceeds going to a charity close to my heart,” a part of his post read. He explained that the V and P Foundation’s artiste healthcare fund supports Caribbean artistes who are faced with health issues and need assistance for surgeries and medication.
Gyptian, given name Windel Beneto Edwards, has scored several hits, with the biggest being Hold Yuh, which peaked at number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 33 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Chart and number six on the Billboard Heatseekers Songs Chart. The official remix for the song features rapper Nicki Minaj. He is currently working on new music.
