Reggae singer Gramps Morgan excited fans in the Cayman Islands recently with his first solo performance in the territory at The Gramps Morgan Experience album launch.

The singer performed there before as part of Morgan Heritage, so he was well aware of the fan base. He said he expected about 300 people, but entertained about 2000 instead.

The enthusiasm and support of the fans resulted in a change of venue.

“The original venue was Mango Tree but then we had to move it to the Lions Centre,” he said. Gramps added that the delivery of his music may have also contributed to the larger than expected turnout. “Also, [the] key is that I performed acoustic with a piano,” he said.

“It was a great feeling to know that reggae music is still appreciated and loved by the people in Cayman Islands,” he added.

When asked what he thought accounted for the increase in patrons, he said, “I’m not sure. I believe after the venue [changed] people thought they would be missing something, I guess. But truthfully people started spreading the word and then began to research and just fell in love with the solo songs.”

Fans were treated to tracks from his solo catalogue and two selections from Morgan Heritage.
