Funeral for Robbie Shakespeare on February 7 | Entertainment

The thanksgiving service for the life of late reggae musician and record producer Robbie Shakespeare, of Sly and Robbie fame, will be held on Monday, February 7.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange made the announcement on Sunday.

Minister Grange, who is handling the arrangements, in collaboration with the Shakespeare family, says the public will be able to participate in the farewell to the musical legend.

The public will be able to view the body of the late bassist on Sunday, February 6, at the National Indoor Sports Centre from midday to 3 p.m.

Condolence books will also be opened at the centre.

“We know that members of the public have been waiting for a chance to say goodbye to Robbie, who – along with Sly – has contributed so much to our music. As we are still operating under covid conditions, we cannot host a big event. But we think this is an appropriate way to allow our people to express their appreciation for this talented musician, while observing the necessary health and safety protocols,” Minister Grange said in the release.

The funeral and interment will be attended by close family and friends, but will not be open to the general public. However, arrangements will be made for the live- streaming of the service on February 7 on social media and PBCJ.

Born on September 27, 1953, Robert Warren Dale Shakespeare was raised in East Kingston in a musical family. As one half of the Riddim Twins, Sly and Robbie, he would rise to become one of the most formidable and internationally acclaimed bass players the world has ever known. Shakespeare died in Florida on December 8, 2021, following kidney surgery. He was 68.
