Dancehall recording artiste Delomar says he is neither looking for a personal response from Prime Minister Andrew Holness to the plea he made on social media last Wednesday, nor is he searching for any clout.
“Me nuh really do politics… But I saw a need to voice my opinions and reach out to Jamaica’s prime minister because me inna di streets daily and all I can hear is people just hungry,” Delomar told THE STAR. As conversations continue around COVID-19, the artiste said that he wanted to highlight social issues which appear to be neglected.
“Ah nuh COVID alone ah keep, sufferation ah keep too and that affect the people more. All the videos we see people lashing out, is showing that they are suffering financially as well as emotionally,” he said. “Him call out fi people to wear mask, sanitise and stay home, but that’s telling me to go home and dead, because when we do that, how do we survive? With persons who work in the day still a mek money, how do the nightlife people mek money now? There needs to be a balance and right now di place shut down without a plan B. So people can still eat food, but corona ah plague we same way and crime rates still a rise.”
SOLUTION
The Badness deejay said most persons, after seeing his video, are asking him to suggest a solution.
“Dat ah nuh my job, me only can try help the country in trying to find one but that’s why we elect ah prime minister, to tackle problems,” he said. “Me know him nuh have all the answers either.”
In relation to the vaccine, the government said it will provide $10,000 to more than 100,000 persons aged 60 and over, who are without stable income, and who receive the vaccination through the SERVE Jamaica Programme. But Delomar said that money could have been put to better use.
He said, “If it was me, I’d start to question it. Why me must take a vaccine for that reason, when me hungry from how long and me couldn’t get nuh help? Hell no! Is better him did bring it to the people for free from first, then, when that proves unsuccessful, tell us ‘yuh haffi get everybody vaccinated so this is what I am doing’.”
He also opined that Holness and the health minister should have taken the vaccince first “so we could feel a little more comfortable about taking it”.
“If him (Holness) tek it tomorrow, me ah guh tek it,” he said.
