Reddit Recap 2022: What Canada was into last year

Reddit’s annual recap of what users read last year dropped Wednesday morning and it turned out Canadians most enjoyed judging the manners of others.

The subreddit r/amitheasshole was the most viewed in Canada of all the platform’s over 100,000 active communities, according to a news release. The discussion-based forum centred around users swapping anecdotes and soliciting feedback on whether they acted like an “a–hole” in different scenarios.

2022 was a mess. Thanks for making it a beautiful one.

Subreddits are essentially mini forums centred on specific themes or topics. Each has its own moderators, rules and cultures. Here’s what topped Canada’s most-viewed list in 2022:

That said, the communities where Canadians posted content and comments looked a little different. These were the subreddits with the most engagement in Canada:

The most upvoted post in Canada came during the height of the war in Ukraine. It was about Ukraine returning all its nuclear warheads to Russia in 1996 “in exchange for a guarantee never to be threatened or invaded.”

In other news, Reddit’s beloved collaborative art project r/place made a return last year, attracting over a billion views worldwide. A “collaborative digital canvas,” r/place was a blank page that allowed Redditors to place one coloured tile wherever they wanted every five minutes.

After being thoroughly mocked for our inability to draw the maple leaf, Canadians finally pulled together long enough to get one decent flag in before it got vandalized and mangled a few minutes later. An image of the full Canadian flag was the second most upvoted post in Canada in 2022.

Other notable Canadian posts from the past year include Toronto passengers teaming up to push a snow-clogged TTC bus and an artist who drew Canada in one continuous line.

Canada loved its sports last year, with the most popular being, unsurprisingly, hockey and basketball. r/hockey and r/nba were the nation’s favourite sports communities.

Toronto was also well represented in sports worldwide, with r/torontoraptors and r/torontobluejays making it into the top five NBA and MLB subreddits, ranking in fifth and third place, respectively.

Overall, Redditors made over 430 million posts and more than 2.5 billion comments in 2022, a year-over-year increase of 14 per cent and seven per cent, respectively. The company logged over 24 billion upvotes.

The most upvoted post in all of last year was a full screenshot of the finished r/place, followed by the aforementioned news of Ukraine surrendering its nuclear warheads to Russia. News of the squirrel from “Ice Age” finally getting his acorn took third place.

Interests shifted in favour of discussion groups worldwide; r/amitheasshole was the most viewed subreddit on the platform last year, while r/askreddit took second place. r/worldnews came in third.
