About the program/department/team

Dr. Rupa Banerjee is the Canada Research Chair in Economic Inclusion, Employment, and Entrepreneurship of Canada’s Immigrants and Associate Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behaviour. Her primary research interest lies in the employment integration of new immigrants to Canada. She is particularly interested in the institutional barriers facing new immigrants in the Canadian labour market. In addition, she is interested in workplace diversity and ethno-racial discrimination, particularly as it applies to second-generation immigrants. Dr. Banerjee’s research has appeared in such journals as International Migration Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of International Migration and Integration, Journal of Labor Research and Relations Industrielles/Industrial Relations.

The opportunity

The purpose of this study is to examine the earnings trajectories of former international students (FISs) in Canada and investigate the factors that contribute to their labour market success once they have become permanent residents. Using data from the longitudinal Canadian Employer-Employee Dynamics Database (CEEDD), this analysis will explore how the earnings trajectories of former international students compare to their Canadian-born and foreign-educated counterparts over time and how employer characteristics influence the earnings of each of these groups. The CEEDD dataset is managed by Statistics Canada and must be accessed at the Research Data Centre in Robarts Library, University of Toronto.

The successful candidate will assist in the following main duties:

  • Assist with data cleaning and coding
  • Assist with designing and running statistical analysis
  • Assist with interpreting results

Qualifications

  • Graduate student (Masters or PhD) in an area related to international education/economics/migration studies and/or quantitative data analysis for social sciences
  • Experience with methodologies for analyzing longitudinal data
  • Experience working with complex Statistics Canada datasets
  • Experience with SAS/R Suite
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel to work at the Research Data Centre facility at the University of Toronto
