Why are scientists worried?

Early evidence suggests Omicron may be significantly more contagious than the highly contagious Delta variant. Because of a high number of mutations, scientists also worry Omicron might be able to dodge the immune system and vaccines more readily than previous variants.

The makers of Regeneron have already indicated that their Covid antibody treatment might be less effective against Omicron but said tweaks to the drug can be made if necessary.
