The New College Writing Centre invites applications for up to seven (7) writing instructor positions for the 2021 Summer Session. The positions will consist of at least 50 hours each. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, one-on-one instruction will be conducted online and may change as determined by the Faculty or the College.
Some positions will involve teaching one-on-one and small group academic writing at New College; these positions will begin in May 2021 and continue through August 2021. Some positions will involve teaching in the English Language Learning Program in non-credit mini-courses or via online writing instruction; these positions require availability late April until mid May 2021 and again for up to two weeks in late August and early September 2021.

The New College Writing Centre offers skilled, sensitive and supportive writing instruction designed to enable students to realize their full potential as learners and contributors to knowledge production—in their fields of study, in the wider community and in professional life. Our approach to writing instruction emphasizes writing as a complex ability that is continuously learned and relearned in relation to changing contexts and purposes. These writing instructor positions will involve providing one-to-one writing instruction to undergraduate students working in a variety of disciplines, including academic programs housed at New College ( ). Writing instructors teach critical analysis, critical reading, modes of argument, research skills, and methods for drafting and revising texts and for preparing oral presentations. Positions may include delivery of writing workshops, delivery of communication skills workshops for English language learners, leading non-credit mini-courses for English language learners, and/or online individual and group academic writing instruction (email or synchronous and asynchronous appointments).
The New College Writing Centre works with students enrolled in our academic programs in addition to students registered at New College who are taking Arts & Science courses more broadly. The ELL program works with undergraduate students across the Faculty of Arts & Science. We encourage applicants who are reflective about the role of faculty in welcoming and mentoring a diverse range of students.
Salary
- $47.94 per hour + 4% vacation pay (Writing Instructor 1)
- $51.55 per hour + 4% vacation pay (Writing Instructor 2)
- $53.06 per hour + 4% vacation pay (Writing Instructor 2 priority)
Qualifications
The following qualifications are required:
- At least a completed Masters degree
- Demonstrated ability to teach writing and communication skills to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- Previous experience teaching writing at the university level, either in a university writing centre and/or in university level courses with significant writing components
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing and critical skills in a one-to-one mode and across a variety of disciplines and programs, including those of New College
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive workshops
- Familiarity with forms of writing and oral communication in a broad range of disciplinary curricula
- The ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a highly collaborative environment
- The ability to navigate online learning platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications would be an asset in this position:
- A completed PhD or completed PhD coursework
- Familiarity with any of the following approaches to scholarship and pedagogy: anti-colonial, decolonizing, anti-racist, feminist, queer, disability, Indigenous, translingual, anti-homophobic and scientific
