Job description: The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) delivers a unique and diverse range of services that safeguard the legal, personal and financial interests of private individuals and estates. Operating within the Victim and Vulnerable Persons Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General, the OPGT is staffed by a variety of professionals from accountants, financial planners and lawyers to individuals with experience in investigations, health care and social work.
Situated within the Trust Reporting Unit, the Trust Analyst plays an important role in the closure of OPGT estate accounts. This opportunity will present a stimulating challenge for detail-oriented professionals with experience in financial reporting, knowledge of case management, and an understanding of estate distribution processes.
Please note: We are considered essential services, therefore, the successful candidates will be reporting to the office. However, alternative work arrangements may be available, as appropriate.
What can I expect to do in this role? You will:
- manage a caseload of active client files toward estate closure by performing financial reporting and administrative tasks according to OPGT timelines and in accordance with established policies and procedures
- compile and send out packages of information and materials to estate trustees and beneficiaries
- liaise with other OPGT units and third parties to obtain relevant documents and information
- analyze the status of files and provide recommendations on outstanding issues
- use research skills to locate beneficiaries for files where client’s family and next of kin are unknown
- calculate the amount of estate payouts and manage electronic payments
How do I qualify?
Technical Knowledge • You have the ability to interpret and apply relevant policies, procedures, directives and legislation to analyze individual cases.
- You have demonstrated knowledge of financial reporting activities and related business fields.
- You have general knowledge and experience related to accounting for estates including receipts, disbursements and investments.
- You have general knowledge of legal proceedings, practices and documentation related to estate administration to ensure correct treatment of trust financial transactions.
- You have knowledge and/or experience in managing an active caseload of files.
- You have working knowledge of standard office software in order to monitor accounts, analyze financial data, and prepare reports, correspondence and spreadsheets.
Analytical and Research Skills • You have demonstrated analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills.
- You have the ability to identify and resolve complex issues.
- You can use your analytical skills to conduct research, ensuring relevant file information is up-to-date.
Communication Skills • You have excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly explain complex issues and explain policies and procedures to beneficiaries, families, estate trustees, guardians and lawyers.
- You have strong interpersonal skills to work with internal staff and external organizations to resolve issues and to negotiate contracts with vendors, which can include, clients, lawyers, bankers, custodians and financial institutions.
Organizational and Teamwork Skills • You can meet challenging time frames and deadlines.
- You can work and contribute effectively within a team environment.
