Job description: The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Justice Technology Services is seeking two Senior Database Administrators who can provide technical consulting expertise in data management and database administration.

What can I expect to do in this role? In this role, you will:

  • provide data management expertise in development of information technology plans and strategies
  • develop methodologies, techniques, and tools for reactive and proactive, manual and automated database performance monitoring
  • lead corporate projects for building, maintaining corporate data model or developing Windows-based and Unix-based database systems by providing technical direction and project leadership to teams
  • develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures for management and use of ministry data
  • evaluate and recommend technical design features and alternatives to ensure proper procedures for backup, recovery, and security of all ministry databases
  • propose cost-effective use of new data base products, data modelling tools and application development aids.
  • provide database backup and recovery expertise to develop procedures and perform Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) exercise to ensure timely recovery of Justice Mission Critical Systems in case of any disasters

How do I qualify?

Database Design and Development Knowledge: You have:

  • the ability to provide data management expertise and advice on database design standards for the ministry
  • knowledge of Windows and Unix-based computer system technologies, understanding of database management using Windows and Unix operating systems, and knowledge of data management and application software
  • the ability to assess and advise on how software/hardware issues relate to data organization and design
  • knowledge of database development methodology, programming languages, database concepts, data types, data dictionaries, and data storage and retrieval techniques to lead the design, testing, and implementation of multi-purpose and multi-client based databases and data management structures

Database Monitoring and Technical Software/Hardware Knowledge: You have:

  • the ability to analyze and maximize capabilities of data bases using available technology; advise on acquisition of new software/hardware
  • the ability to monitor and maintain database systems performance through development of standards
  • the ability to advise on solutions to data recovery, integrity, security issues, and assess impact of data organization on systems performance
  • the ability evaluate database software and data management techniques/services for potential use by ministry
  • knowledge in SQL and Oracle database administration and tuning, Unix and Windows system administration, database and system backup and recovery.
  • proficiency in Unix shell scripting and Windows host scripting, Perl and Java programming, database replication, and enterprise backup and recovery solutions such as Tivoli, Rman, TDP, and DB Queue.

Communication Skills: You have the ability to:

  • develop proposals for ministry information technology plans, technology strategies, and information architecture in relation to operational objectives and short/long term business strategies.
  • prepare reports, briefs, and papers on database management policies and standards
  • ability to explain technical solutions to non-technical personnel
  • deliver presentations to senior management (systems and non-systems managers) on proposals for data management aspects of information architecture and information technology plans/strategies
  • present and discuss benefits/drawbacks of proposals on data management strategies with senior managers and encourage support of recommended approach

Problem-Solving and Evaluative Skills: You have the ability to:

  • research and analyze data management requirements such as integrity/security/recovery issues and developing recommendations for ministry standards on database design and data organization.
  • analyze and develop proposals for data management component of ministry information technology plan by reviewing systems performance issues and data organization in relation to ministry business strategies and operational requirements
  • assess clients’ requirements in relation to multi-purpose and multi-client data base systems and lead project team in design/development of corporate data models for systems, databases, data management structures, standards, policies and procedures.
  • work on ministry information architecture by developing technical design features and alternatives to ensure effective backup, recovery and security of ministry databases; identifying components subject to data corruption; initiating projects to improve integrity.
  • assess and evaluate new methods, technologies and techniques for potential ministry use and impact of changes within system (both technical and financial) and making recommendations on same.

Other Essential Skills: You have:

  • experience interpreting, applying, and complying with directives, standards, policies and guidelines related to data management and use/acquisition of information technology
  • knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations that apply to the work and of any potential or actual danger to health and safety in the workplace to ensure compliance when performing group leadership responsibilities
