Job description: The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for temporary full-time Resident Support Workers for Riverview Gardens Long Term Care facility with the Seniors Services division. This position is for a period up 3 months, with possibility of extension.

The Resident Support Worker (RSW) is responsible for assisting staff with resident care and other non-nursing duties as assigned.
Essential responsibilities
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Tidy resident rooms ensuring areas are clear of debris, dishes and glasses, closing armoires and ensuring the availability of garbage cans and tissues for residents. Make beds and change linens as required.
- Clean and label Resident personal items such as tooth brushes/tooth paste/comb/brushes/hand creams and eyeglasses.
- Set out clothes in residents’ rooms for the next day
- Provide 1:1 Resident support and companionship
- Answer call bells and communicate Residents’ concerns to staff
- Ensure Resident’s call bell is within reach when Resident is in room. Report to registered staff if any call bells need adjusting to be within reach.
- Assist staff with mechanical lift transfers as the second person
- Assist with nutrition and dining assistance, including but not limited to distributing clothing protectors for mealtimes; clearing dishes after meals; meal assistance for Residents through encouragement and coaching.
- Assist with collection and distribution of laundry
- Collaborate with Residents, families, and team members to maintain a positive, supportive and safe environment for all
- Transport Residents to onsite programming, dining room, and internal appointments; accommodate Resident’s right to choose
- Other non-nursing duties as assigned
- Assist on screening desk as assigned
- Adherence to all policies, procedures and mission/vision/values statements of the Home
- Maintain professionalism with all Residents, staff, families, volunteers, community members and agency representatives
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of Residents and staff as required under legislation and as per policies and procedures of the Home
- Accept responsibility for the quality of care and service provided
Essential qualifications
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED certificate)
Work environment/hours of work
- This position works mostly indoors
- This position works weekday and weekend hours as well as afternoon and evening hours
Background check requirements
Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment; you must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check
Essential physical and/or safety requirements
- Annual Flu immunization is required
- 2 step TB skin test to be completed within two weeks of starting position
- The employer may request a “Physical Task Analysis”
- Bending: occasional stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching (clear, clean and sanitize tables after meal service; clean spills; make beds and change linens; maintain a clean, tidy and safe environment; put away personal laundry and regularly organize residents closets and drawers; collect soiled linen/clothing and deliver to the appropriate locations; clean resident wheelchairs; groom resident i.e. comb/brush hair, assist with dressing pending comfort level of assistant, assist and or set up resident for brushing of teeth, assist with face and handwashing, nail polish, hair styling)
- Walking: frequent balancing, constant walking on level surface (porter residents back to their room, sunroom or TV area; transport resident to onsite programming, dining room, and internal appointments; answer call bells; collect soiled linen/clothing and deliver to the appropriate locations; distribute fresh towels and face cloths to resident rooms; Resident security checks)
- Sitting: occasional sitting in a chair or stool (feed residents; provide 1:1 support and companionship for residents; assist recreation staff with video calls)
- Reaching: occasional reaching forward and below the shoulder, frequent handling (up to 20lbs.) (clear, clean and sanitize tables after meal service; clean spills; make beds and change linens clearing dishes after meals; collect soiled linen/clothing and deliver to the appropriate locations; clean bathtubs between baths; stock supplies in the tub room; clean resident wheelchairs; groom resident i.e. comb/brush hair, assist with dressing pending comfort level of assistant, assist and or set up resident for brushing of teeth, assist with face and handwashing, nail polish, hair styling; act as second care provider as spotter with mechanical lift transfers
- Lifting: occasional carrying, constant lifting from waist to shoulder and pulling below shoulder (up to 20 lbs) (maintain a clean, tidy and safe environment; put away personal laundry and regularly organize residents closets and drawers; collect soiled linen/clothing and deliver to the appropriate locations; distribute fresh towels and face cloths to resident rooms; porter residents back to their room, sunroom or TV area)
- Standing: frequent standing inside (support residents with high needs in choosing their clothing)
- Hands: constant finger dexterity; occasional gripping (iPad visits; make beds; fold laundry; put on aprons)

Expected salary: $18.14 – 24.52 per hour
