Job title: Research Technician II – Critical Care Research

Job description: The Critical Care Department Critical Care Research is currently looking for a Research Technician II. This position is a great opportunity to support important translational critical care research at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, as a research technician with the Translational Research Team of COLOBILI/CANCOV and the Critical Care Medicine (CCM) and COVID-19 Biobanks. This job represents staff who will provide assistance, organization and administrative support to work with different clinical and laboratory staff members to coordinate the timely collection, processing, handling, storage and inventory of high-quality research samples and manage the sensitive clinical data associated with these samples. Tasks may include collecting and recording data, limited processing of data, basic laboratory procedures, interviewing/screening of study participants, collection of biologic samples (e.g. blood collection), processing (centrifuge, aliquoting, etc.), labeling, annotating, and shipping samples and study-related material. In general, the staff will provide support at a basic level for the ICU Research Coordinators, Biobank Manager, and Principal Investigators. Staff must be flexible to work beyond the job description at times as work demands. Staff reports to the Associate Scientist and Principal Investigator.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Administrative Support for Translational Research Project 50%
- General office duties e.g. filing, faxing, mailings, courier services, photocopying, etc.
- Maintaining regulatory requirements for study PIs (ethics and contracts submission)
- Maintain records for all clinical protocols, ethics approval and contracts
- Update records for study protocols and amendments
- Ordering supplies and maintaining inventory
- Organizing office space
- Literature searches
- Update lab licenses for all laboratories used within a trial
- Update monitoring logs i.e. –70 freezer logs, sample storage logs, etc.
- Interact with numerous departments such as pharmacy and various laboratories
Clinical/Laboratory Support for Translational Research and Biobank 50%
- Responsible for prospective patient sample retrieval and processing, storage and distribution of samples according to strict biobank and study guidelines
- Assist with sample tracking, coding, patient de-identification, sample distribution and sample quality control assays.
- Support development of COVID-19 Biobank procedures and Standard Operating Procedures
- Accurate collection, transcription and prompt entry of clinical data into a secure database
- Interact with sponsoring/granting firms/agencies regarding requests for clarifications of data and assisting monitors during site visits
- Prepares routine media, solutions and reagents
- Perform well-defined, routine or repetitive tests, experiments, or other procedures
- Collection, transcription and entry of study related data
- Limited processing of data
- Shipment of samples to collaborators
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree, with molecular biology experience preferred
- Basic computer skills, particularly database, spreadsheet and word processing
- Basic Data Management Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical and scientific terminology
- Excellent communication (verbal/written) and interpersonal skills are necessary.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail and proven ability to learn new skills.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
- Able to keep written records
- Professionalism and self-motivation

Expected salary: $24.27 – 31.55 per hour
