A Better opportunity:
Better is looking for an Engineering Manager to join our test engineering team. The test engineering team is still small and you will have a huge impact in defining the technical direction and culture of the team. The ideal candidate is a leader, a quality evangelist, and thrives in a collaborative environment. The minimum base salary for an L4 Software Engineer is $112,000 with an estimated 5% yearly cash bonus, and will be adjusted based on the level and years of experience that is determined in the final interview. Our Engineering team is headquartered in NYC, but is remote friendly.
Better technology:
- Test automation tools include Selenium, Pytest, Jest, Cypress, Webdriver.io, React Testing Library, Ember Test, and Browserstack for cross-browser testing.
- On the backend we have a Node.js monolith written in JavaScript (ES6) and TypeScript, along with microservices (mostly Python 3 + Flask).
- On the frontend we use Ember, React, and Sass.
Responsibilities will include:
- Support multiple Software Engineers in Test and QA Specialists embedded in product teams. These test engineering members determine the fitness of features for release through automation test suites and/or exploratory and context-driven manual testing.
- Help define the technical vision for our test tooling across product teams and enable test engineers to deliver on that vision. We strive for heavy test automation to allow for continuous delivery, so our tooling must be world class and easy to use.
- Help direct reports achieve both team and personal goals.
- Assist in recruiting future test engineering members
About You:
- At least one year experience in a Test Manager role leading a combination of automation and manual-focused testers.
- Can write effective automated tests from scratch yourself and make informed decisions on the direction of existing test suites. Some familiarity with Python and/or JavaScript for test automation is preferred.
- You are up to date with the latest tools, trends and technologies in the testing industry.
- You are comfortable advocating for quality; specifically developing working relationships with Product Managers, Engineering and Design to incorporate quality thinking into our processes
- You are comfortable reviewing pull requests to mentor and improve quality.
- Ability to see the big picture from the user perspective. In particular, experience testing a consumer product is preferred.
- You are detailed, organized, and inquisitive.
- You can guide direct reports as they learn more about technology and automation testing.

The Better mission is rooted in values that drive us.
- We do what’s in the best interest of the consumer, not ourselves
- We have growth mindsets, not fixed ones
- We believe that success lies in execution, not credentials
- We act like owners, not just employees
- We work to find answers on our own, not wait for them to be given to us
- We optimize for mission, not ego
Our mission speaks for itself-we continue to outpace the industry at every turn. We’ve recently joined forces in partnership with Ally Bank, and our backers have helped build some of the most transformative tech and finance companies in history. Kleiner Perkins, Goldman Sachs, American Express, Citigroup, Activant Capital, Ally Bank, and others have invested in our vision for what homeownership can be.
