Housing: Self contained apartment available @ $600/month

Hours: 35 hours/week, offered through the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Program (see eligibility criteria below)
Duration: August 2021 until March 2022
Compensation: $15.50/hour

About Hearts Content ( )

The Brantford to Dundas rail trail cuts through our organic farm. We focus on herbs and wild craft, medicinal and edible plant walks, and value added products (e.g. salves, dried herbs). We are founding members of the Langford Conservancy ( ), Better Brant ( ) and Lynden Friends of Migrant Farm Workers. We work to protect farmland, conserve natural spaces, and to create a welcoming inclusive community for migrant farm workers.

Role and Responsibilities: Supporting our work related to eco-tourism, conservation and sustainability (including land use planning), and outreach to migrant farm workers.

Core responsibilities and work will include:

Farm Duties:

  • tending the garden, landscaping, minor renovations, and prepping and maintaining units and campsites for guests

Sustainability and conservation related practices:

  • Sorting unsold food for distribution in the migrant farm workers community,
  • Helping plan and restore a wetland,
  • Tree care,
  • Removing invasive species

Community outreach with migrant farm workers:

  • Including but not limited to, food drops, supporting recreational opportunities (e.g. fishing trips, providing bicycles), and teaching English to Mexican farm workers.

Bookkeeping:

  • Help with maintaining a good record of income and expenses

Eligibility:

This is a part of the Youth Employment and Skills Program. Candidates must be:

  • between the ages of 15 and 30 inclusive when the internship started
  • unemployed or underemployed*
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

*Underemployed will include students who are currently employed and are taking on an expanded role or more hours of work during the internship

Skills and Experience:

  • A good work ethic, willingness to learn, and to work cooperatively with others.
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Experience working with social media, excel spreadsheets an/or QuickBooks and Mailchimp
  • Interest in community building (particularly with migrant farm workers), environmental sustainability, eco-tourism and organic herb and wild-craft work.

Assets (but not requirements):

  • Previous experience working with farm machinery
  • Carpentry and/or drywall experience
  • Ability to speak some Spanish
  • Familiarity with the Mexican and Caribbean community
  • Experience with Quickbooks

This is a physically demanding job. We are a smoke free farm

We are very conscientious about safety during Covid19. PPEs will be provided for use if working in closed spaces or within 2 meters of each other. Periodic COVID19 tests may be required.
