We are looking for an Optical Diagnostics Technician to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The Optical Diagnostics Technician would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
You will be required to work closely with the staff of NRC’s Gas Turbine Laboratory, along with external clients, in the support of project based data collection requiring optical diagnostics measurements. This includes the installation and operation of specialized equipment for the collection and analysis of test condition results associated with the performance and reliability of aircraft systems, structures and engine systems under a variety of operating conditions. Some of the equipment includes, but is not limited to; high speed and standard video cameras, advanced lighting systems, specialized and standard instrumentation, laser measurements, custom sensors, pneumatic and control systems. You will also be responsible for the configuration and operation of related software operating systems to optimize performance, troubleshoot issues that may arise, collect and store data to assist in the vetting of results. You will also be responsible for the maintenance and calibration of all equipment to ensure it is in operating condition and to certify the integrity of all measurements. While mainly tasked in the duties above, you may also be assigned to other duties within your capacity in support of facility operations or projects within the Gas Turbine Laboratory, as required.

Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Diploma from a post-secondary Technology Program in electrical/electronic/instrumentation/ or related field.
Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and proven experience of at least 3 years in optical technology and/or instrumentation and data acquisition projects for aircraft engine testing may be considered.

Experience
- Significant experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of specialized imaging equipment and associated electronic instrumentation in a laboratory or in industrial-like facilities;
- Significant experience in working in multidisciplinary teams to perform research and development projects under tight schedules;
- Significant experience in assisting in experiment testing and with client technical support; and
- Significant experience in following quality assurance and health and safety procedure in a laboratory or industrial-like working environment.

Assessment Criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical Competencies
- Ability to follow technical instructions and understand electrical, mechanical, pneumatic systems, as well as, specialized diagrams and P&IDs;
- Knowledge in experimental design, preparation and installation, calibrating and operating optical equipment, lasers, instrumentation and sensors;
- Basic computer skills, along with the ability to work with a variety of operating systems required in the configuration and operation of instrumentation for performing test measurements; then demonstrate the validation of the collected data and the safe handling of said data;
- Ability to develop, document and improve upon operating, calibration and setup information/procedures; and
- Significant knowledge of safe working techniques and methods used in industrial-like facilities and laboratories.
Assets:
- Solid Knowledge in installation of video systems for capturing detailed experimental imagery;
- Significant experience in high-speed video setup and operations;
- Advanced knowledge in Laser safety; and
- Ability to prepare technical drawings and P&IDs using CAD tools.

Salary Range
From $58,445 to $80,040 per annum.
Notes
- A pre-qualified list may be established for similar positions for a one year period.
- Work to be executed in the NRC Montreal Rd. Campus and Ottawa Uplands Campus (Ottawa Airport Area)
- A flexible schedule and overtime may be required.
- Travel may be required according to specific project specifications.
