Job Summary:
Ontario Tech University is looking for a Manager, Research Partnerships and Innovation to join the Office of Research Services (ORS) team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a lead role in growing the research capacity of the university. As a next-generation university, we are looking for innovative and strategic thinkers who are truly passionate about our mission to generate societal and economic impact through multidisciplinary, collaborative research, commercialization and knowledge mobilization. Reporting to the Executive Director, Office of Research Services, the incumbent will join a rapidly growing team and lead the objectives of our ambitious Partnership and Innovation Strategy.
The Manager, Research Partnerships and Innovation is responsible for developing and driving the research partnerships and innovation strategy to increase the university’s engagement with industry, academic, community and not-for-profit organizations. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of revenue generation, as well as strategic partnerships and commercialization, and will demonstrate the creativity necessary to establish a thriving partnerships and innovation portfolio for the University. The incumbent needs to be able to think creatively to craft partnerships that meet organization and partners’ objectives. The incumbent will need to be a team player and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to develop and strengthen research partnerships and innovation pipeline for the university research community.
Nature of Work:
Position reports to Jennifer Freeman, Executive Director, Office of Research Services.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Lead the implementation and delivery of the overarching research partnership and innovation strategy at Ontario Tech University. This includes developing tactical strategies to increase research partnerships and mobilizing and commercializing intellectual property.
- Oversee and manage, in coordination with research legal counsel, all research agreements involving research, technology and services that advance collaboration between external partners and Ontario Tech researchers. Ensure agreements are in alignment with all university policies and other regulatory requirements.
- Generate and steward key partnerships that will enable the university’s research community to strengthen research capacity and commercialization opportunities.
- Identify partnership and innovation grant opportunities and pursue them in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strengthen the University’s research reputation and profile through networking, outreach and promotional activities.
- Manage a small team to ensure the effective and professional operation of research partnerships and innovation services, including communications and knowledge mobilization activities.
- Introduce potential partners to appropriate faculty members and leadership (Deans, Vice-Presidents, Executive Director, etc.) at Ontario Tech and facilitate the establishment of collaborations.
- Facilitate an internal and external collaborative culture and innovation ecosystem that links entrepreneurship, external relations and advancement, partnerships, intellectual property mobilization and other services to support faculty research and innovation.
- Where appropriate, facilitate transfer of technology and knowledge from project outcomes to external partners.
- Work with the Executive Director, Office of Research Services as part of the ORS leadership team.
- Lead and/or assist with other special projects that support the research and innovation portfolio.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of university research processes, including industry-facing funding programs, the development of applications for collaborative university-industry research funding.
- Extensive knowledge of Intellectual Property commercialization practices and licensing.
- Extensive experience negotiating and understanding of legal agreements including but not limited to NDAs, MTAs, research contracts, and technology licenses.
- Demonstrated ability for brokering and sustaining research partnerships.
- Knowledge of business development practices and of economic development.
- Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet).
Education
- A minimum Master’s degree in Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or related disciplines.
- Basic Licensing Course or equivalent credentials.
- Verification of Academic credentials may be required Required Experience
- 7+ years of prior work experience with leading partnership development, contract negotiation and execution, and intellectual property in a university or related environment.
- Experience using B2B marketing tools and CRMs (such as Hubspot) to facilitate effective management reporting.
- Familiarity with Canadian Higher Education policy, compliance, and regulatory understanding is desirable
- Well-established networks, and understanding of Durham region and the national landscape, as well as an established recognition, through which they remain up-to-date on current developments and changes across the sector
- Experience working with confidential information.
- Highly motivated and creative thinker who is able to capitalize on opportunities within a complex university environment.
- Ability to work under pressure and in a team environment.
- Strong customer service orientation and ability to establish and maintain a positive working relationship amongst diverse groups.
- Significant experience in approaching, and communicating with senior-level executives across diverse organizations.
- Good familiarity with government decision-making processes, both political and technical, including budget processes, appropriation, protocols, and communications.
- Ability to support equity, diversity and inclusiveness within all aspects of the position.
- Other experiences leading and implementing strategic initiatives.
