Kaeja d’Dance is seeking a Managing Director to partner with the Co-Artistic Directors to fulfill the artistic vision of the Company. This is an exciting opportunity for an art’s professional to work with one of Canada’s longest established and vibrant contemporary dance companies.
This position (37.5 hours per week) will provide opportunities for a knowledgeable, ambitious individual to take on a leading role in the development of the Company’s continuity and new initiatives. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, self-directed problem solver, a team player and has at least 3 years working experience in the Non-profit Arts Sector. The candidate has exceptional good judgement and a commitment to the audience and donor experience. Now heading into our 30th anniversary, the Company is taking stock of and reimagining aspects of our programming through a process lens of equity, diversity and inclusiveness. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Granting: Manage all of the company’s operating and project grants from the preparation of applications to the submission of final reports
- Develop multi-year budget for operating grants
- Research new and updated funding opportunities from public and private sources
- Development: Design and implementing strategies to increase revenue
- Recruit new community and corporate partners for donations, sponsorships and in-kind support
- Steward relationships with multiple stakeholders including donors, sponsors, politicians, volunteers
- Financial Management: Develop the annual budget which is presented to the board for approval, provide quarterly reports and facilitate the preparation of annual financial statements
- Work with a PT bookkeeper to prepare monthly reconciliations, process payroll liabilities and maintain accurate records of financial transactions
- Project management of large-scale productions and multi-year community engagement activities
- Manage human resources aspects of recruiting and training new staff, updating HR policies, and preparing contracts for staff and free-lance collaborators
- Contribute to development of strategies to reduce and remove barriers to employment, participation and opportunities
- Implement processes that make Kaeja d’Dance a more pluralistic organization
- Team with 2 full-time Artistic Directors and supervise 1 full-time Project & Communications Manager, several part-time employees and contract staff and volunteers
- Collaborate with the Project and Communications Manager on the development of marketing and communication strategies
Requirements:
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE DESIRED
- Strong interest in the performing arts, community engagement, public space activation and city building
- Excellent organizational skills: managing critical paths, creating timelines, maintaining schedules, tracking/documenting materials, proofreading copy, etc
- A strong and vital approach, commitment and implementation towards anti-racism and anti-harassment and the lived experience of marginalized collaborators and team members, volunteers and audiences
- Experience managing small teams and training new team members and/or volunteers
- Advanced budget understanding and management
- Advanced problem-solving skills. You think ahead, anticipate potential problems/outcomes and plan accordingly
- Highly developed research and grant writing skills and a track record of writing successful funding submissions
- Fluency in English
- Experience with private fundraising such as corporate sponsorship or foundation donations
- Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders such as presenters, arts councils, volunteers, our board, current and potential donors, local politicians, small business owners and community groups with a commitment to quality customer service;
- Comfort in evolving projects and ability to prioritize deadlines
Must be comfortable using:
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Excel or other spreadsheet data management software
- Google Products: Google Drive, Google Docs primarily
- Familiarity with basic bookkeeping processes (Quick Books knowledge an asset)
Additional Info:
This is a full-time position M-F, 37.5hr/week. Occasional over-time/evening or weekend work as needed during production times.
We are open to applicants from a wide range of education backgrounds and lived experience for this position. We are seeking individuals with training and expertise in arts management, including fundraising, sponsorship development, grant writing, budget development and financial reporting.
Management experience in the arts or other not-for-profit organization will be essential to success in this role. Individuals who feel they have the skills and competencies required to meaningfully contribute to this position are encouraged to apply.
Benefits:
- 3weeks paid holiday = 2weeks of vacation annually plus an additional week off during office closure from Dec 25 – Jan 1
- Holiday increases to 4weeks after the 1st year

NB: once in-person events resume, the MD will be required on-site for productions and some work days
