Your opportunity:
Under the direction of the Director of Accessibility Services, the Learning Strategies and Assistive Technology Advisor is responsible for fostering academic skill development and support the transition of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students registered with Accessibility Services. These students maybe those living with learning disabilities, mental health or medical conditions, mobility or functional disabilities, sensory disabilities, and/or neurological disabilities. The Learning Strategies and Assistive Technology Advisor develops strategies along with corresponding technologies in areas such as organizational, analytical, comprehension, general study and coping skills.
The Learning Strategies and Assistive Technology Advisor coordinates transition and educational programs that assist students in making the transition to university, utilizing their accommodations, incorporating technology-based strategies into their learning, and using available services. Work will also include creating online materials and supports to enhance student learning. The Learning Strategies and Assistive Technology Advisor creates programs and workshops using a deep knowledge of the learning needs of students with disabilities and a strong equity framework and analysis of the barriers for students with disabilities face. The incumbent works on technology-based learning strategy referrals, providing orientation and knowledge of strategy software for students, and follows the emerging trends within online learning. The Learning Strategies and Assistive Technology Advisor liaises with community groups and on campus groups which utilize critical perspectives on disability within their work, particularly as it relates to academic learning in the virtual environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing advanced academic and learning skills counselling
- Determining what assistive technology is best fit for student based on their profile
- Providing detailed information and demonstrating the use of assistive technology to students
- Providing orientation to students on the installation, set-up, customization and features of learning disability specific software/hardware solutions
- Facilitating psychoeducational workshops that promote the development of coping strategies and skills
- Developing components of learning support programs
- Developing student assessment plans to support student learning outcomes and competencies
Essential Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree with a focus on adult learning and/or learning related to disability-related barriers or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum four years related experience in a post-secondary setting working with students with disabilities. An understanding of the meta-cognitive and academic deficits and strengths of students with learning disabilities (LD) or others needing unique academic support and the effective methods of utilizing strengths to compensate for deficits. A thorough understanding on the impact of mental health diagnoses on cognition.
- Demonstrated experience working with a broad range of students with disabilities developing social/educational programming using experiential learning methodologies.
- Experience offering learning strategies workshops and assisting in the delivery of small group learning is essential.
- Demonstrated experience working with individuals with disabilities in using adaptive technology. The incumbent needs to demonstrate current knowledge of field of adaptive technologies including voice recognition, text to voice, applications as well as experience with the installation, troubleshooting student problems and maintenance of adaptive technologies in both Macintosh and Windows environments using adaptive technology to problem solve issues related to learning and completing academic work.
- Knowledge of adaptive software, technology, and the use of online learning strategies.
- An excellent working knowledge of computers and awareness in working with a wide variety of software for learning (e.g. Word, Excel, concept-mapping software, textHELP, Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking).
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and interview skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to understand the implications of specific learning disabilities as they pertain to functioning in an academic institution as well as to functioning in a broader context.
- Independent judgment and creative problem solving is required especially regarding individual program plans.
- Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
- Resourcefulness, flexibility, empathy and demonstrated knowledge of the demands students experience in university educational environments.
Assets (Nonessential):
- Certification in Learning Strategies, Assistive Technologies, Coaching, or Supplemental Instruction.
- A thorough knowledge of the learning needs and challenges of adults with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and acquired brain injuries.
- Knowledge of the university environment and available services.
- Experience with university-level Math and Science preferred.
