Your opportunity:
Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the lab technician will work to support our experimental work by assisting with caring for plants in growth chambers, culturing microbes, carrying out DNA extractions and other basic molecular biology tasks, providing logistical support for experiments, and contributing to the general up-keep of lab and maintenance of equipment, etc.
This is a one-year grant based term position with possibility of renewal. Onsite lab presence (daily) is required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process
- Collecting experimental data, verifying results and passing on findings
- Maintaining inventory of glass and dishware, workstations, chemicals and/or apparatus within the lab
- Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and/or experiments
- Applying established standards when planting, maintaining, and fertilizing plant material
- Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
- Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others
- Ordering supplies with approval
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Plant Biology, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology or acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education
- Minimum two years of recent and relevant experience in providing technical and administrative lab support, involving maintaining plant and microbial lines in the lab and extracting DNA and preparing samples for sequencing, such as 16S amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing
- Experience in preparing and assembling solutions, materials, supplies and equipment commonly used in biology wet labs
- Experience in employing a range of molecular techniques including: DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis to prepare samples for sequencing
- Experience in growing and maintaining plants and culturing microbes for research purposes
- Experience in operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting laboratory equipment including a biosafety cabinet, fume hood, flow cytometer, thermocycler, microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges, gel-running devices, computers and ancillary equipment
- Experience working with detailed protocols to prevent cross contamination
- Experience with data input and quality control of data using Excel and R or Python
- Experience with general lab duties including ordering and maintaining supplies, processing expense forms ,and cleaning glassware
- Strong technical skills in all aspects mentioned above
- Knowledge of sterile working techniques, including experience with autoclaves
- Knowledge of operating environmental growth chambers
- Knowledge of how to treat and dispose of biological materials and general biosafety, chemical safety, and WHMIS standards
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational ability, tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
- Demonstrated problem solving skill with the ability to proactively recognize issues
Assets (Nonessential):
- Valid G driver’s license preferred for picking up and delivering animals, plants, microorganisms and supplies

USW Pay Band 09 — $58,242 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $74,482. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
