The Bank of Canada is Canada’s Bank. We act as the fiscal agent for the Government of Canada, settle the daily transactions of major Canadian banks and their customers, manage our own accounts, and hold Canadian dollar securities for other central banks. We also provide banking services to the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Crown corporation that insures eligible Canadian bank deposits.
These operations go on quietly and efficiently behind the scenes, every day—typically around 550 transactions a day, valued at about $40 billion.

What you will do
As an experienced Java Developer you will use your exceptional development skills to build innovative and sustainable solutions that will contribute to our Payments Modernization initiative. You will be working within our Banking Operations organization that is comprised of highly functional teams focused on rapid delivery of value to financial institutes in Canada and around the world.

As a Java Software Developer, you will work in a collaborative environment and will have opportunities to think outside the box. You will work on a variety of platforms at varying heights in the web stack and will also perform unit testing and will make your code easily debuggable in production.

What you need to succeed
This is a hands-on software development role that requires strong software development skills, a passion for technology and a strong desire to learn. You will also need to be proactive and have a client-oriented approach when troubleshooting problems and resolving issues related to product, process and tools. It would be great if you had hands-on experience analyzing and optimizing code and performance tuning across application layers as well as providing production support of a critical application.

The following technologies are in active use in our development environment. Having your skillset match as many of these as possible will be an asset:

  • Java 8 knowledge & development, experience in Object Oriented design and development
  • JEE application development (EJB, Servlet, JDBC, JMS, JMX, JTA, JCA or JAXB)
  • Web front end development (such as Thymeleaf, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax/JQuery)
  • Apache Commons library, Drools (or equivalent rules engine), Java EE deployment, log4j, Jenkins, Git, GitHUB, JIRA or SVN and DevOPS tools
  • Java JPA & ORMs such as Hibernate and EclipseLink
  • Spring Core, Spring MVC, Spring Integration, Spring Security and Bean Validation
  • Test Driven Development (TDD) and tools such as Junit and Mockito and Arquillian testing framework
  • Strong relational database skills (SQL), including experience with writing stored procedures and PL/SQL using tools such as SQL Plus / SQL Developer
  • WebLogic server development and configuration

Your education and experience
The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science with 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • You will work remotely from any location within Canada while the Bank operates under mandatory telework. Flexibility for remote work for the duration of the term may be granted.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $80,300 to $94,400 (job grade 16)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (5 to 7% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (10% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
