About the position
The Bank of Canada is at the forefront of technology and cyber security, investing in the latest technologies to provide a superior security services in a world-class organization. The Cyber Security Operations team within the Monitoring and Response portfolio is focused on cyber security monitoring and response capabilities along with their integration, automation, and iterative improvement in order to respond to internal and external cyber threats that would have an impact on the business functions of the Bank of Canada.

The Bank of Canada is looking for a recent graduate to join its Cyber Security team within Information Technology Services (ITS). This is an excellent opportunity where you will be provided with additional time to grow into your role and develop the skill set necessary to evolve in the position. There may be opportunities for temporary or full-time positions following the completion of this developmental assignment.

Your future responsibilities
We are looking for a Security Monitoring (SecMon) specialist (Job Grade 13) to join our Cyber Security Operations team within the Monitoring and Response portfolio to help perform IT security monitoring and incident response to IT security incidents, including detect, analyze and implement approved security safeguards to limit intrusions and incidents. Your contribution is crucial as we continue to mature our monitoring and response capabilities.

Your knowledge and skills

  • Understanding of some or all of the following: network protocols, TCP/IP fundamentals, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), logging, network & system forensic investigation techniques, and malware triage and reverse engineering
  • Ability to manage and configure Windows, Unix and/or security appliances
  • Ability to script in either Python or PowerShell
  • Understanding of Agile development or SCRUM methodologies
  • Basic skills in gathering and documenting business and functional requirements toward the implementation security tools
  • Proficiency in the use of common Office software tools (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others (written and verbal)
  • Self-starter, team player and innovative problem solver

Assets

  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g. Splunk certificates, CISSP)
  • Specialized education in the Cyber Security field
  • Participation in ethical hacking competitions, capture-the-flag events, bug bounty programs or other activities related to cyber security assessment
  • Understanding of information security concepts (e.g., CIA Triad, vulnerability, threat, asset, safeguard, risk, Common Vulnerability Scoring System, disaster recovery, etc.)

Education and experience
For your candidacy to be considered, you must be a recent graduate of a Bachelor or College diploma in Computer Science, engineering, cyber security or equivalent. The competition date must be between December 2018 and June 2021.

  • You will work remotely from any location within Canada while the Bank operates under mandatory telework. Flexibility for remote work for the duration of the term may be granted.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $57,107 to $67,185 (job grade 13)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (3 to 5% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (7% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
