The Enterprise Academic & Collaborative Technologies (ACT) group is a partnership between the Chief Information Officer’s (CIO) division and the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation (CTSI).
ACT is a central department responsible for all matters pertaining to the development, operation, maintenance and effectiveness of core teaching and learning systems and enterprise collaborative technologies at U of T. Included within these responsibilities are the academic toolbox (the learning management system and associated applications), web hosting services (CMS), collaborative applications (i.e., MS Teams) and enterprise video-mediated applications, including the central video-conferencing bridge and support for mobile application development (via the MADLab). This responsibility includes vendor relationship management with both for-profit suppliers as well as non-profit and consortium partners. ACT also serves as the main connector between the CIO’s portfolio and library technology services.

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) portfolio, operating as Information Technology Services (ITS), is home to over 200 IT professionals whoprovide University-wide IT services and systems to enable University of Toronto (U of T) to maintain its status as Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery and knowledge creation. ITS provides leadership and undertakes strategic and tactical initiatives to secure the greatest value from the University’s investment in IT. By strategically focusing on our people and working in collaboration with academic administrators, process owners and distributed IT service providers, ITS identifies technology opportunities and inefficiencies, and implements services and technology solutions to reduce complexity and improve aggregate IT experience of students, faculty and staff.

The Information Systems Specialist role will be responsible for developing and maintaining highly-available, cost-efficient cloud-based and hybrid architectures for ITS enterprise level services. This includes contributing to the development of data movement systems in support of various analytics initiatives. The incumbent will also provide training, technical consultation and support to clients and staff as required for systems, tools and deliverables. Your insights and experience will help enable innovative use of technology stacks to develop and maintain system tools, standards, schedules, protocols and processes for University-wide benefit and to assist in setting priorities for departmental deliverables.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and implementing components of IT related projects
- Analyzing and developing program scripts to extract, reformat and analyze data
- Configuring system features and applications
- Developing detailed documentation required for each project
- Troubleshooting and resolving server/system issues
- Analyzing system needs and recommending technical solutions
- Developing and editing standard operating procedures for IT services
- Advising on cost, feasibility and impact of different implementation solutions
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum 4 years of experience building and maintaining complex system architectures with a specific focus on enterprise CMS (Drupal, WordPress) and big data solutions.
- In-depth working experience using AWS platform services and infrastructure (EC2, Lambda, CloudFormation, S3, VPC, CloudFront, CloudWatch, WAF, Developer Tools, Athena, API Gateway, Cognito, Glue)
- Experience in AWS networking, security, performance and cost optimization.
- Experience building and optimizing big data ETL pipelines, data lake/warehouse architectures and data analytics.
- Solid experience in infrastructure automation coding using scripting (Shell or Bash or Python, PowerShell or equivalent).
- Strong experience in maintaining and operating Linux based servers and web application software (Apache, Nginx, HAProxy).
- In-depth knowledge of practices and tools related to DevOps, IaC and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Git, CloudFormation).
- Proficient with one or more scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python.
- Knowledge ofweb traffic log collection and analytics platforms (Elastic Stack).
- Proficiency in source code management with Git.
- Advanced skills in creating and maintaining technical documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to conduct research into software-related issues and products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of comfort speaking with IT management and developers.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high organizational and leadership abilities, judgment, and tact. Ability to work well as a team leader or as a member of a project team, and with all levels of academic and administration officials.
