What can I expect to do in this role? In this role, you will:

  • assist program scientists and research partners in all components of forest ecology and management research by designing, developing, and implementing research studies that contribute to improved knowledge of forested ecosystems and forest management in Ontario
  • provide specialized scientific, statistical and technical support to forest ecology and management related research programs
  • coordinate projects that contribute to understanding the effects of forest management practices on site productivity, biodiversity and other ecosystem services
  • communicate results and achievements through scientific publications, presentations and other means to project partners and clients

How do I qualify?

Mandatory You must have a valid class ‘G’ driver’s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver’s licence upon being hired.

Technical expertise: • thorough knowledge in the science of forestry and forest ecology to understand the context of forest ecology and advanced principles of silviculture

  • knowledge of forest mensuration and soils assessment techniques is required to assess and interpret response to forest disturbances
  • knowledge of plant systematics, autecology and identification techniques are required to assess and interpret responses of trees and other forest plants, species at risk, and invasive species to natural disturbances and/or forest practices
  • knowledge of legislation governing forest management planning in Ontario such as the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, Forest Management Manuals, etc.

Communication and interpersonal skills: • proven ability to communicate and present information to a variety of audiences, such as scientific and technical audiences, practitioners, the public, colleagues and partners

  • demonstrated interpersonal skills, tact and good judgement in order to collaborate effectively with researchers, partners and other resource managers and to work within a team as group leader or support
  • proven ability to write concise technical documents such as reports, guidance documents, and publish in scientific peer-reviewed journals

Computer proficiency: • knowledge of standard experimental and sampling designs, database management and applicable software, advanced statistics, word processing, graphics software and information technology to acquire data, prepare/present reports and transfer results

Analytical and organizational skills: • knowledge of standard experimental and sampling designs and analytical skills necessary to analyze and interpret study results and conduct advanced statistical analysis

  • proficient in data analysis to assess data for outliers, errors and omissions and maintain a high level of data integrity
  • planning and organizational skills to maintain concurrent projects, organize work schedules, complete tasks and meet deadlines monitor and report on multiple projects

Field experience: • ability and technical skills to work in a field setting for long hours, in rough terrain, in inclement weather, in remote locations requiring extended periods away from home using forestry field equipment such as tablets, ATVs, trailers, and communication devices
