What you will do
We are currently seeking a Data Architect to join the Financial Market & Banking Operations (FMBO) Portfolio in the Information Technology Services (ITS) Department.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Business Solutions & Architecture, you will work collaboratively with data scrum teams to lead the development of the data solution architectures for various projects within the Portfolio. As a member of the Bank of Canada ITS architecture community, you will work alongside other Data and Solution Architects to help review and critique other initiative solutions to ensure they are closely aligned with the Bank’s road maps and best practices.
You will be accountable for creating data architecture, for integration of data between information systems and data repositories, which will streamline data interfaces, improve data redundancy, resiliency and reliability, in support of business objectives. You ensure that the data integration, data flow, and data architectures meet evolving business and operational requirements while aligning with enterprise standards. You also provide overall direction and guidance for data solutions within the portfolio.
More specifically you will:
- Participate in all phases of the development life cycle to design and implement the required data solutions, adding technical know-how, creativity and a seasoned perspective to initiatives and teams
- Play the role of the lead technical authority and responsible for planning all activities leading to the development of the data architecture
- Review and guide data model designs with a focus on areas influencing interoperability, analytics including data lineage, data models, in compliance with portfolio standards
- Analyze, design, and develop roadmaps and implementation plans for a heterogeneous data architecture
- Analyze the current data architecture to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement
What you need to succeed
- Strong understanding of structured data and a good working knowledge of unstructured data (e.g. rich media, documents, voice, etc.) and their associated technologies (e.g. XML, JSON, NoSQL, etc.)
- Work experience with or in:
o establishing the foundation components of data architecture to support operational and analytic reporting solutions, including the development and application of enterprise standards for data modelling, data architecture principles and best practices for transactional and data warehouse designs
o working with business stakeholders to understand their requirements, and design data solution to meet requirements
o data modelling and query tools, preferably ER/Studio and Erwin; and relational databases, preferably Oracle 12C Database and SQL Server 2012
o working in Agile Teams, ability to explore new data technology and trends
Nice-to-have
- exposure to diverse work environments, with a broad understanding of multiple business sectors, hardware, and software technologies as well IT security
- knowledge of leading data platforms, such as Qlik, Tableau, Cognos, and Power BI
- understanding of core business processes at the Bank
Your education and experience
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or Systems Analysis along with a minimum of seven years of experience with all aspects of a project from design to production. In addition, a minimum of five years of experience in a Data Architect role is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
What you need to know
- Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of intermediate (level 3) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of functional (level 4) in second official language.
- Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
- Security level required: Secret
- You will work remotely from any location within Canada while the Bank operates under mandatory telework. Flexibility for remote work for the duration of the term may be granted.

- Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $95,500 to $119,400 (job grade 18)
- Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
