Job description: Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current DOH employee with permanent or contingent-permanent competitive status as a Consultant Nurse, G-24 OR current NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a qualified title and eligible for transfer to Consultant Nurse HNSA under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law OR eligible for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law (NYS employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service at G-22 or higher and meeting the open competitive minimum qualifications listed below).

Open Competitive Minimum Qualifications: Currently licensed and registered as a professional nurse in NYS; AND six years of public health, community health, or other nursing experience in an appropriate facility setting. Three years of this experience must have been providing direct patient care and three years of this experience must have been in nursing supervision or working in the capacity of a nurse administrator.

Preferred Qualifications: • 3 years of experience of working in a sexual health/STI clinical setting

  • At least one year of experience working with local health departments
  • 2 years of experience informing sexual health or STI protocols, procedures, guidance, or policy
  • 2 years of providing sexual health and/or clinical consulting, advise or recommendations
  • 1 year developing and/or implementing health related programming

Duties Description The Consultant Nurse will be located in the AIDS Institute (AI); Office of Sexual Health and Epidemiology (OSHE) and will serve as the lead or advisor on sexual health- related clinical and technical guidance, education, policy and practice for New York State. This position is housed under the Sexual Health Education, Research, Policy, Programming and Administration (SHERPPA) Unit.

The responsibilities for the Consultant Nurse will consist of serving as the lead on promoting CDC-recommended STI screening, diagnosis, and treatment; monitoring, interpreting, and disseminating important and/or new STI/sexual health-related issues such as outbreaks, emerging disease, recommended treatment changes, biomedical advances, and reporting requirements to local providers and organizations; providing clinical consultation and expertise on sexual health-related education and campaign materials, community health promotion, health advisories, policies, and outbreak protocols; developing, implementing, and maintaining sexual health equity programming and services; participating in enhanced STI surveillance activities; and other clinical duties as assigned.

Additional Comments Permanent, full-time (transfer) or provisional pending exam. This position involves travel which may include locations not served by public transportation. Candidates appointed provisionally will be required to take and pass the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, when it is given, and be immediately appointable from the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the New York State Education Department must be maintained for continued employment in title.

Expected salary: $77187 – 97448 per year
