Job title: Chief Building Official

Job description: Under the direction of the Director, Planning & Building Services, the Chief Building Official is responsible for the management and implementation of the work and the achievement of the objectives within the Building Services business unit. This position is responsible for ensuring buildings are constructed in accordance with Town bylaws and the Ontario Building Code through examination and approval of architectural and construction drawings, site plans and site inspections; issuing permits; assisting developers and general contractors with permits and drawings as well as record keeping. This position manages the operation and maintenance of the Town’s administrative building (Town Hall), premises and all building safety and security services.
Job Requirements
Credentials
Post-secondary certificate in civil engineering technology (CET) or Ontario architectural or structural technology or equivalent and progressive municipal experience to a supervisory level.
Valid Glass “G” Driver’s License in good standing and a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business.
Due to the responsibilities of this position a Police Information Check satisfactory to the Town is required.
Knowledge/Skills Required
Progressively responsible experience at a senior supervisory level.
Strong customer service orientation, interpersonal, consultative, negotiation, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, facilitation, project management, inspection, mediation and presentation skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of budget preparation and management.
Proficient in the use of MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), information management systems and technical engineering applications.
Thorough working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, the Building Code Act, Bill 124, Town Zoning Bylaw, all other Town bylaws, Property Standards Bylaw, and the Planning Act, Provincial Offences Act, National Standards act and other applicable legislation; ability to interpret blueprints and construction drawings.
Specialized training in Building Code principles, theories and field construction management.
Thorough knowledge of the Building Code which is a complex set of regulations dealing with all aspects of construction such as fire protection and occupancy, safety and accessibility, structural design, heating ventilation, plumbing, sewage systems, renovations and electrical systems.
Knowledge of applicable legislation, bylaws, legal proceedings and the ability to interpret legislation such as Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA), Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the Employment Standards Act.
