Job description: 4-H programs create supportive learning environments in which diverse youth and adults reach their fullest potential as capable, competent, and caring citizens. The 4-H Temporary 4-H Program Coordinator provides support to the 4-H Youth Development Program activities for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia & Greene Counties. Responsibilities will primarily focus on summer events, programs, and fairs.

The Coordinator works as part of a dynamic 4-H team, recruiting and reaching diverse audiences and performing existing or new responsibilities which can change based on Association needs, new partnerships, grant initiatives, etc.

This position typically works on a full-time, seasonal (temporary) basis from June through September, which may change or vary based on Association needs.

Required Qualifications

Associate’s degree in related field. GED/High School Diploma and one-year transferrable program/functional experience may substitute for an Associate’s degree.

Experience relevant to the role of this position.

Travel Requirements – Ability to meet regular travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver’s license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required. Transports youth participants to county and state fairs, trips, etc. Frequently uses personal and/or Association vehicles.

Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Program Skills – Commitment to helping to ensure inclusive programs and reach diverse audiences. Ability to effectively coordinate and deliver assigned programs. Serve as an effective resource for program volunteers and participants. Maintain program participant and volunteer data confidentiality. Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.

Coordination Skills – Ability to effectively coordinate program efforts including data management and reporting, scheduling and coordinating programs and events, compiling and maintaining materials and resources, following financial reporting requirements.

Communication & Marketing Skills – Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with program participants, volunteers, employees and others through a variety of media. Ability to effectively market program through social, print and other media, resulting in robust program participation. Ability to recruit, engage and motivate volunteers and program participants. Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

Computer Skills – Proficiency or ability to learn and effectively use software including use of the internet, program related software, and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery – 15%

Serve as subject matter resource, utilizing established program resources and materials, to provide information and resources to program participants for assigned programs.

Foster acceptance of program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences through frequent contact with program participants, parents, and volunteers.

Interact with program participants, parents, and volunteers representing CCE in a professional manner at all times. Presents as a positive role model for youth participants in all program activities and programs.

Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

Deliver high quality educational programs utilizing established resources and materials to address identified programming priorities.

Utilize a variety of educational methods which may include direct teaching, group experiences, media, newsletters, electronic technology, internet, and distance learning to deliver program.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 5%

Assist supervisor in the planning of assigned programs.

Management – 5%

Assist supervisor in the managing assigned programs.

Assist with solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with supervisor guidance as needed.

Coordination/Operation – 70%

Assist in coordinating summer events, programs, fairs, or other assigned programs.

Provide support and coordination for various County and State Fair activities including enlistment of judges, scheduling of animal shows, staffing and coordination of volunteers for designated shows, programs, and events.

Apply existing subject matter knowledge to compile and maintain teaching materials.

Coordinate administrative tasks related to 4-H Youth Development events.

Assist with the coordination, inventory, organization and preparation of materials, equipment, reference materials, etc.

Coordinate registration, set-up, prepare resources, for assigned programs.

Assist in coordinating local 4-H fundraising efforts.

Accurately collect, prepare and maintain paperwork, participant files and database as required by supervisor, Association and funding source requirements.

Prepare and submit expense reports in a timely manner per established policy and procedures.

Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to program newsletters, media releases, bulk mailings, social media accounts, media interviews, website postings to increase program visibility and to address issues.

Carry out primary responsibilities for 4-H data management which encompasses inputting member, volunteer and program delivery information and providing printouts, updates and deliver accurate year end information as requested for state and federal reporting.

Assist in coordinating the promotion and marketing of 4-H Youth Development and volunteer recruitment efforts.

Assist with program evaluation to include collecting evaluation and needs assessment data from program participants based on existing evaluation framework and guidelines.

Maintain confidentiality of information regarding all program participants and families.

Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

Provide information in a timely manner to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.

Regularly transport self, youth participants and program materials to program delivery sites and trip destinations.

Regularly lift, move or transport program materials.

Professional Improvement – 5%

In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions.

Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a temporary, full-time, nonexempt position. Compensation paid at the rate of $17.00 per hour.
