Position Summary:

This skills-based course provides students with a broad introduction to the humanities as a scholarly enterprise. Students will learn the basic skills necessary to find, understand, conduct and communicate research in the humanities. Through lectures and small-group classes students will learn: how humanities scholars conduct research and report their results; the differences between primary and secondary sources; how to use databases and other research tools to gather scholarly resources effectively; how to use the critical reasoning techniques common in humanities inquiry; how to frame humanities research questions; how to synthesize and articulate their findings clearly, especially in written format; and how to be ethical scholars by practicing research and academic integrity. By the end of the course students will have experience using MLA and CMS styles of citation, interpreting both primary and secondary sources, preparing bibliographical information, and organizing, drafting and revising an argumentative essay.

Qualifications – Required: Master’s Degree

Qualifications – Discipline: MA degree in humanities or related discipline.

Qualifications – Other: Familiarity with research in humanities is essential, and related research experience is preferred. Prior experience teaching academic literacy is an asset, as is evidence of exemplary teaching.

Salary: 1/3rd of a stipend ($8,414.99)

Courses created specifically for online instruction have been collaboratively designed by a content expert (normally a faculty member) and an instructional designer and digital media and educational technology specialists. Online course development is guided by instructional design strategies and makes use of pedagogically led technology. Online courses are intentionally developed for instructors and students to be separated by space (location) and/or time (often both).

Remote instruction, as the term is used here, uses technology-enabled tools and software to facilitate course delivery when in-person instruction is not possible in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Remote” instruction is not directly comparable to “online course” instruction. The difference is not in the quality of the content, but in the design of content delivery.

In-person fall teaching will be supported by classroom safety and hygiene protocols aligned with public health guidelines in effect at the time and will adhere to any COVID-19 related university policies including the .
