Job description: Reporting to the Manager, Infectious Diseases Control Division (IDCD) Vaccine Inventory, the Registered Pharmacy Technician is responsible for ensuring publicly-funded vaccines used in public health immunization clinics and by community healthcare providers are distributed, transported, stored and handled in a manner that prevents wastage and preserves the safety, integrity and potency of the vaccines; conducting perpetual vaccine inventory management which includes the cycle counting, order, distribution, and return processes; attending premises to conduct annual routine cold chain inspections of refrigeration units that store publicly-funded vaccines and required follow ups if necessary; ensuring cold chain monitoring and storage systems including purpose-built refrigeration units, passive and active vaccine transport containers are maintained clean and in good repair; attending provincial and local work groups related to vaccine safety and inventory to ensure that current and best practices are integrated into the program’s work flows and processes.
Major Responsibilities
- Distributes (picking, packing, shipping & delivery) publicly-funded vaccines and applies current best practices throughout all processes.
- Implements quantity and quality control measures to prevent distribution errors, product wastage, and overstocking of publicly-funded vaccines at internal and external customer holding points.
- Conducts, on an annual or as needed basis, cold chain inspections to ensure Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) standards are met and follows up with premises that do not meet the minimum standards.
- Supports accurate data entry of vaccine ordering, distribution, and returns within the provincial database system (Panorama).
- Conducts cycle counting of the current perpetual inventory prior to submitting orders to Ontario Government Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Services (OGPMSS) to ensure physical counts reflect provincial database system counts.
- Gathers customer information from premises that store publicly-funded vaccines and ensures that data inputted into the provincial database system is accurate, complete, up-to-date, and concise.
- Inspects and ensures vaccine storage and handling areas and equipment are maintained clean and in good repair.
- Provides input into the development and revision of process improvements, policies and procedures, and internal/external forms related to vaccine storage and handling.
- Responds to customer inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate.
- Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of an accredited Community College Diploma for a Registered Pharmacy Technician or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certificate of Registration as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists or approved equivalent.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience in pharmaceutical inventory management.
- Sound knowledge of vaccines and vaccine storage and handling conditions such as cold chain requirements.
- Sound knowledge of relevant Federal and Provincial statutes, Regulations or Acts such as the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA), Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS), Vaccine Storage and Handling Guidelines, Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), and the Ontario Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule.
- Ability to carry and lift objects up to 50 lbs.
- Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act and a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business.
- Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer focus, communication, collaboration and personal ownership.
