Research & Training Goals

The postdoctoral fellow will develop and lead a line of research in digital health, based around some of the novel technologies and approaches at Humber River Hospital. The topic of the fellow’s research is flexible but should be based in one of these three streams in which Dr. Wegier’s lab is currently interested in: * AI in healthcare. Past research in this area includes HOMR, a non-AI mortality prediction model for the timely identification of patients with unmet palliative needs, being implemented by Dr Wegier’s team at over 20 hospitals in Ontario. Our goal with this stream would be the development of awesome and sophisticated models based on the wealth of data collected at Humber River Hospital, such as models predicting healthcare outcomes or in-hospital events (e.g., patient falls) to improve the delivery of healthcare.

  • Design for healthcare & data visualization. Past research has included the design of a medication timeline for the visualization of polypharmacy and the development of a data display for home blood pressure measurements to improve shared decision making around hypertension. Our goal with this stream would be the development and testing of novel design work in healthcare or new ways to visualize healthcare data—with the aim of improving medical decision making for patients and physicians.
  • Decision aids & risk communication. Past research has included the ARISE paradigm for communicating conditional probabilities to patients. We are currently tools for CPR decisions, goals of care conversations, and education about hip fracture prognosis and recovery. Our goal with this stream would be the development of cool approaches to communicating healthcare information to patients to improve their understanding of their health conditions and future medical chocies.
