Reporting to the Associate Director of Knowledge Mobilization and Strategic Alliances (KMSA), you will be responsible for managing the approval of studies involving human participants conducted by or on behalf of Canadian Blood Services in accordance with internal and external policies and standards. You will facilitate reviews of studies 1) by staff from across the organization to ensure alignment with organizational needs and capabilities, and to abide by organizational legal and privacy policies, 2) by the Canadian Blood Services Research Ethics Board (REB) to ensure alignment with research ethics standards by following TCPS2 and other approved standards and policies. In this role you will be responsible for the Program’s administrative processes and their optimization to achieve efficiency and continuous improvement while retaining customer service excellence.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the Canadian Blood Services and Research Ethics Board (REB) reviews of studies submitted to Canadian Blood Services Research Ethics Program (REP).
  • Update and optimize the REP processes to achieve efficiency and continuous improvement while retaining customer service excellence, and retaining alignment with Canadian Blood Services policies and guidelines, and TCPS2 and other research ethics guidelines and standards.
  • Provide support to REB Chair, Director Innovation & Portfolio Management, and VP Medical Affairs and Innovation to ensure appropriate governance of the REB and the REP, and for appropriate reporting to Canadian Blood Services Safety Research Ethics Committee (SREC).
  • Performs work in accordance with the provisions of the Canadian Blood Services’ Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • University degree in a research related field (health sciences or social sciences preferred) from a recognized academic institution
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in ethics administration or research administration
  • Experience with research ethics review of studies involving human participants or working with or collaborating with research ethics committees is an asset
  • Experience in academic research in the area of transfusion or cellular and organ transplantation is an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

Demonstrated Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of Tri-council Policy Statement (TCPS2) or knowledge in research ethics guidelines and best practices
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills in English; bilingualism is considered an asset
  • Ability to analyze complex problems with keen attention to detail, interpret system needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively in a team environment and with internal and external stakeholders; ability to provide strategic guidance in a collaborative, consultative, and positive manner
  • Ability to work in a complex, adaptive learning environment
