There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed. Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year. Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records, operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards, act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required. Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials. Acts as cashier. Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports. Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals. Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment. Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules. May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks. CONTRACT TITLE College Assistant FLSA Non-exempt CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Labor Studies and Urban and Community Studies that are designed to meet the needs of working adults as well as traditional-age college students who seek to learn more about the challenges confronting poor and working-class populations in the workplace and in the community. It also collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to give workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement. Its faculty includes distinguished scholars in the social sciences as well as expert practitioners in government, labor, and public service. Through SLU’s Murphy Institute, the School: 1) collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to provide workers with the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement, and 2) provides educational and research services to the labor movement and the broader community. SLU seeks an Academic Support and Technology Tutor to support the LEAP to Teacher (LTT) students at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). The tutor will aid students through their online coursework on their paths to become teachers. Under the supervision of the Director of Worker Education, the tutor will and coordinate his/her schedule and daily assignments with the LTT site coordinator at BMCC and assigned BMCC faculty members. Primary responsibilities include: Work closely with the professors in the assigned classes throughout the semester to identify students’ technological challenges. Assist adult students with all aspects of technological challenges associated with their coursework and necessary online platforms, namely Blackboard, Zoom, Flipgrid, and Google Classroom. Assist the LEAP to Teacher students with academic writing and other proficiencies in the coursework, provide in-person and online tutoring sessions and workshops, and assist students using CUNY Library Resources. Routinely follow-up with students and develop metrics to track the tutoring sessions and students’ progress. Coordinate with the LTT coordinator for administrative tasks as needed, such as collecting intake forms to code students, Participate in team and staff meetings. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Minimum HS diploma; Undergraduate degree or higher in technology, science, or education field preferred. Previous tutoring or teaching experience is preferred. Ability to assist with web-based research assignments and online tutoring. Ability to proficiently learn necessary platforms applicable with distance learning. Strong communication and computer skills. Experience with adult learners is preferred. Ability and willingness to work evening hours and weekends. The position requires flexibility, which includes understanding that more than one approach may be needed to best aid each student. COMPENSATION Commensurate with experience, up to $24 per hour. Approximately 16-20 hours per week (evening and weekend hours are required).
