MVCC is seeking to fill a part-time position in our Student Life Department. The STEP Advisor reports directly to the STEP Coordinator and is responsible for assisting students with their goal planning and assessments; academic advisement, program instruction and learning outcomes. As such, the STEP Advisor is expected to function as a student advocate and role model; a liaison between Mohawk Valley Community College, CSTEP programs, local school district, STEP collaborating organizations, and STEP parents. Equally important, assist with the creation and maintenance of individual student files

Key responsibilities for this position include:

  • Working with the Coordinator to ensure the achievement of STEP goals and objectives, and the timely completion of STEP reports.
  • Functioning as a student advocate in all interactions with parents, family, school, and community constituencies.
  • Recruitment of STEP students.
  • Providing tutorial and instructional services to STEP students, as required.
  • Monitoring student academic performance and obtaining quarterly grade reports as well as Regent’s and standardized test scores of STEP students.
  • Developing, coordinating, facilitating, and/or supervising: Student job shadowing and internship placement and evaluations; parental involvement activities and the STEP Parent Association; program activities to insure that students are acquiring the skills necessary to pursue postsecondary education.
  • Program services to enhance and increase students’ math skills, experiences in laboratory sciences, and understanding of fundamental concepts in math and science.
  • Planning, attending, chaperoning and/or providing transportation to: Program activities; scheduled Professional Development activities; staff meetings; school, college, community meetings and function; STEP Parent Association events.
  • Communicating with: Program Director and Coordinator regarding STEP program and students; school and community personnel; parents and family members.
  • Functioning as a representative of the STEP program. Activities may include: Collaborating with other programs and organizations to deliver services to students; delivering presentations about program components to school and community constituencies; attending College, school, and community meetings as a STEP representative.
  • Supporting the STEP philosophy and reflecting this in his/her interaction with students, staff, the MVCC community, and the greater Mohawk Valley.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Community college teaching/tutoring experience
