Your opportunity:

The Primary Care Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary health care team at the University of Toronto Student Health and Wellness Centre.

Under the direction of the Clinical Team Lead, the Primary Care RN provides professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies and procedures; while adhering to the University of Toronto Health and Wellness’ vision, mission and strategic plan. Inherit in this role are the knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to critical thinking and decision making, ability to analyze and assess presenting physical and mental health concerns and collaborate with the medical team in the management of these health concerns.

Duties include: performing a comprehensive and focused physical and mental health assessment that includes health history and relevant evaluation; conducting suicide and mental health risk assessments; developing appropriate health plans in collaboration with the client and other service providers; participating in client care caseconferences to ensure coordinated, comprehensive and holistic services; participating in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of health promotion programs, screening programs, medical directives and policies/procedures; providing education related to healthy living, prevention of injury, illness and communicable diseases, care and treatment, and support systems as appropriate to the client situation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
  • Determining if there is a life-threatening illness, risk of self-harm or harm to others and independently applying appropriate interventions
  • Providing detailed information to physicians regarding patient needs and background history as required
  • Providing ongoing health counselling to patients
  • Updating and maintaining patient records
  • Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical oremotional injury or harm

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BScN) required. Current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Liability insurance or membership in a professional association which offers liability insurance (i.e. RNAO).
  • Minimum five years of clinical practice in primary health (i.e. Family Practice, Community Nursing, Occupational Nursing, Emergency), including experience in mental health.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Familiar with use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Knowledge of primary health care, mental health, and social determinants of health.
  • Understands the importance of evidenced based practice within the health care field.
  • Demonstrates strength in the nursing process and critical thinking.
  • Understands and demonstrates College of Nurses Standards of Practice guidelines including but not limited to ethics, confidentiality, and documentation.
  • Understands the role of Health and Safety within the University.
  • Understands and implements the concepts of PHIPA and PIPEDA.
  • Computer skills required (Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook).
  • Excellent decision-making, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work professionally andcollaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Prioritizes and manages time effectively and is flexible in an active work environment.
  • Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness; respectful of cultural diversity.

Schedule: Full-Time Flexibility to work shifts (including evening), some overtime on weekdays may be required.
Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 14 — $79,404 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $101,547. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
