Job description: Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division is looking for a Scientific Engineering Associate to join their Building Technology Group!

In this role, you will conduct R&D, provide technical support, and contribute to multiple projects related to Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings (GEB) and Demand Response (DR). The primary focus will be on Building Demand Flexibility (DF). Building DF is the capability provided by end-uses or on-site DERs to shed, shift, modulate the use of electricity. Building DF can be used, typically in response to price or other grid signals, to provide benefits to buildings’ owners, occupants, and to the grid. We develop the framework and metrics using simulation tools, field study results to determine building-level and end-use load flexibility and resources’ availability.

We are looking for an innovative thinker to conduct building simulations using commercial software suites. This is a great opportunity for a talented early career professional who can solve technical problems, explore and synthesize information, and present that information/data in a succinct fashion.

What You Will Do:

Perform building energy simulations to support building demand flexibility related research, including batch runs and results diagnosis using EnergyPlus and OpenStudio, post-process outputs into meaningful tables and charts.

Use data analytics packages (e.g. Python) and online collaboration platforms (e.g. Github) to process, visualize, and model data generated from energy simulations, lab testing or real building data.

Collaborate with team and contribute to conceptualizing, developing, and improving analysis approaches and workflows.

Contribute to technical reports, presentations, publications and outreach materials for internal and external audiences.

What is Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline and 2 years of work experience in building energy efficiency or building technologies/systems or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of commercial building systems, energy efficiency, demand response strategies, and technologies.

Skilled in EnergyPlus modeling, Python data science and version control platforms (e.g. Github).

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What We Prefer:

Advanced Degree in Architecture, Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Experience working in a research or energy consulting environment.

Knowledge of commercial building end use systems, HVAC system design and controls, retro-commissioning, and distributed energy resources (DERs).

Notes:

This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
