In this role, you will provide experience and specialization in highly technical aspects of systems hardware/ software/connectivity in Canadian Blood Services. You will act as a technical resource to Information Technology and Canadian Blood Services, supporting and maintaining the day-to-day operations of Unix/AIX on Power and Window servers and enterprise class hardware.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing third/fourth level support for systems; including designing and implementing standards, supporting hardware/software, including server and storage infrastructure.
  • Conducting problem management with hardware and software suppliers.
  • Supporting end-users via telephone, analyzing, troubleshooting and resolving customer reported problems.
  • Researching new technology (Storage Area Networks, Operating Systems, Hardware, etc.) , ensuring products will integrate into CBS’ systems and providing recommendations.
  • Recommending and implementing system enhancements.
  • Review and analyzing proposed system changes for impact on application, network and architectural environments, testing all changes and updating documentation accordingly.
  • Collaborating with IT Services and Security & Architecture teams to ensure best practices solutions.
  • Cross-training peers as required.
  • Acting as technical resource to Information Technology and Canadian Blood Services.
  • Planning, coordinating and managing team tasks.
  • Monitoring the progress of the tasks and taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Monitor server workload trends and adjust, to ensure optimum utilization of computing resources.

Required Skills

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably a University Degree or Community College Diploma in Computer Science.
  • At least 3-4years of experience in a third/fourth technical support role including help desk, involving UNIX/Windows server administration and Network support.
  • Completion of a Certified UNIX Administration course is preferred.

Demonstrated Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of AIX, PowerVM and Linux Administration and Microsoft Windows Server, in an enterprise environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Azure, ADFS, Teams Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policies, Federation and DFS is an asset
  • Experienced in working within a remotely managed Data Centre environment.
  • Ability to assist all IT project teams when required
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills, establishing collaborative work relationships with clients and colleagues with strong communications skills, both written and oral and good organizational skills are required.
  • Working knowledge of configuring and supporting virtual infrastructure environments: AIX and Linux on IBM Power, VMware ESXi
  • Proactively manage the performance and optimize servers.
  • Can diagnose and analyze workloads on compute and storage platforms
  • Good Understanding of IBM PowerVM and VIOS architecture
  • Good understanding of Backup environments such as Veritas Netbackup
  • Good understanding of configuration management tools such as Ansible / Puppet / Chef
  • Experience in developing scripts, Python, Shell Scripting / Powershell and other scripting languages
  • Good understanding of AIX NIM (network install manager) for PowerVM environment and Kickstart installation in Linux environment
  • Experience with container-based technologies Docker, Openshift and Kubernetes
  • Experience leveraging or creating automation to manage diverse Infrastructure
  • Good troubleshooting skills on various Linux versions and Windows Operating Systems
  • Have a good understanding of IT direction and technology trends
  • Good understanding of networking concept to deploy and support remote site infrastructure
  • Ability to work on call rotation and occasionally off shifts or weekends.

Canadian Blood Services offers a comprehensive compensation package including:

  • Competitive base salary range of $63,000 to $75,000
  • Up to 6% performance award opportunity
