Reporting to the Technical Coordinator, the Program Technician will be responsible for providing front line support for microcomputers and networks to ensure the smooth operation of client and administrative computers for projects.

Summary of Duties:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade software;
  • Install and configure non network printers;
  • Install and configure modems and routers for Virtual Private Network access;
  • Setup of local area networks;
  • Identify CMOS battery problems;
  • Assess failures in UPS backup power units, monitors; CD ROM drives, network interface cards;
  • Identify hardware problems and make appropriate referrals for hardware repairs;
  • Act as a resource to staff and clients in the use of computers, peripherals, and applicable software;
  • Liaise with project leaders and administrative staff to facilitate use of computer equipment;
  • Act as a liaison between staff and the Technical Coordinator to ensure appropriate setup, maintenance and repair of all computerized technology, if appropriate;
  • Produce microcomputer software and support materials for educational or training purposes;
  • Assess hardware and software for compatibility with existing systems and report findings;
  • Track software replacement/upgrades following repairs to computer components;
  • Perform computer system software tune-ups;
  • Maintain inventory of all hardware and software;
  • Backup and restore images as needed;
  • Create/ delete/update of local NT Server/Windows 2000 Server user accounts;
  • Create/delete/update of VPN client accounts;
  • Continually upgrade skills as needed to keep abreast of changing technology; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Two year community college diploma in computer science or related field with two years experience in an educational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Understanding of micro or personal computer system technologies and peripherals including operating systems, use and capabilities of application software, use of LAN/WAN and/or telecommunications networks, Virtual Private Networks and tunnelling, diagnostic software, anti-virus programs and recovery procedures;
  • Knowledge of computer software and hardware including equipment operation and troubleshooting;
  • Good oral, written, interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Strong analytical, reasoning and problem solving skills;
  • Proven experience providing assistance to clients with a customer service focus; and
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and consistently meeting deadlines;

Special Requirements:

  • Requires travel to TDSB sites on a regular basis:
  • Provision of own vehicle for Board Business;
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 kilograms.

Hours: 17.5 hours per week to be scheduled according to program needs between 8:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m.

Work Year: 12 month

Note: This is an externally funded program, dependent on renewal of funding each year, subject to cancellation by funder with two weeks’ notice. Program presently has funding to March 31, 2022 with the possibility of an extension.

Paid Holiday & Vacation: Employee entitlement is in accordance with the provisions for Externally Funded Programs as outlined in the CUPE 4400 C Collective Agreement (Article T and Article U)
