Program Overview – Homelessness & Housing Help, Housing & Homelessness Services

The Homelessness & Housing Help centre’s primary goal is helping homeless people and those living on low income to find and keep appropriate housing and prevent evictions wherever possible. The philosophy of this work is in keeping with WoodGreen’s commitment to: participate in the building of sustainable communities, social justice, and creating environments free of discrimination or any other barriers which impede the full development of service users.

What You Will Do

  • Provide individuals with supports and services with respect to locating and securing stable housing and assistance with rent supplement and RGI applications.
  • Provide individuals with resources and referrals to programs and services in areas such as housing, health care, food assistance, legal, day care, employment, and training.
  • Responsible for providing short and long term case management supports and services around housing and housing related issues.
  • Provide resources and services with respect to rapid and emergency relocation efforts.
  • Provide individuals with access to programs and services internally through other WoodGreen programs, such as Financial Empowerment, Employment, Child Care, and Counselling, and through partnerships with CAMH such as Shared Care (physician, social work, and nursing).
  • Build capacity within individuals by providing services and referrals that empower and educate individuals to move beyond vulnerability and marginalization into independent, self-sufficient, and inclusive communities.
  • Plan and implement ongoing workshops/promotions/awareness of the Homelessness & Housing Help program and its services to the immediate and broader community.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Services or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of direct experience in providing housing help and/or information and referral services.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Strong intake and assessment skills, advocacy, and negotiating skills.
  • Demonstrated information and referral skills.
  • Experience working with homeless/street involved individuals, psychiatric survivors, tenants, and landlords.
  • Excellent understanding of Harm Reduction, Housing First, and Social Determinants of Health models.
  • Experience in workshop development, community organizing, and community development.
  • Understanding of issues in the rooming house sector.
  • Excellent administrative, documentation, and computer skills.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.
  • Knowledge of resources for vulnerable, homeless, and low-income singles and families.
  • Knowledge of issues and barriers faced by vulnerable, homeless, and low-income singles and families.
