Things to do after Installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

On my previous post Things to do after install Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn, I give you some tips what you should do after installing Ubuntu 14.10. Ubuntu 14.10 is the latest release for Ubuntu Linux Distribution. But this time , I give you some tips for the older version of Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

After Installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, there are many things you can do for it, including the Hardware Drivers, Install Audio and Video Codecs, Install Archiving formats, and some tweaks that you should before using Ubuntu 14.04 do to make the OS load the best experience.

So here are the tips and things you can do after installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

1. Add Mirror Repositories

Mirror Repositories will really useful if there is repository server that really close to your place, it will give you stability and more speed when you trying to update or even upgrading your packages. To add mirror repositories do this command and edit this file.

$ sudo vim /etc/apt/source.list

2. Update & Upgrade Packages

Now after add mirror repositories on source.list, you need to check for updates o make sure that your repository is not outdated, to update your repository use this command :

$ sudo apt-get update

After finished updating the repository, you can upgrade your packages to the newer version, to upgrade packages use this command :

$ sudo apt-get upgrade

3. Install Compression Tools and Formats

To install compression tools and formats you can use this command :

$ sudo apt-get install mpack arj rar unrar unace file-roller zip unzip uudeview p7zip-full p7zip-rar sharutils cabextract

By installing those packages will allow you to work with almost all compression formated files.

4. Install VLC

If you want to watch movies on any video files format, then VLC is the best for you, VLC is most populer media player for linux, it has many features that you can’t find on other media player. You can install VLC via Ubuntu Software Center or via terminal with this command :

$ sudo apt-get install VLC

5. Install Package Management Tools

Package Management Tool is a tool that automatically to resolve dependencies error, there are GUI and CLI Package management tool that work faster than the Ubuntu Software Center. To install use this command :

$ sudo apt-get install synaptic gdebi-core aptitude

synaptic : is a GUI package management tool, with it interface you can install, remov, and upgrade, or fix broken dependencies and packages easily.

gdebi-core : gdebi is a local deb packages resolver, it will automatically install its dependencies.

aptitude : is a menu-driven, text-based front-end to the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT) system. Many of the common package management functions, such as installation, rem

6. Install Additional Drivers

If you found that some of your devices is not working, maybe the problem is the driver. For Example you found that your graphics card isn’t working, because you can play any 3d games, that means you need to install the driver before use the devices, but don’t worry if you don’t know where to find the driver, Ubuntu has a feature to find and install the driver for the devices automatically. So how to use it ?

You can found the Additional Drivers dialogue on the system tray, but if the dialog isn’t opened you need to search for Additional Drivers on you Menu, and open it.

Additional Drivers program will search any devices that need a new drivers, there are a selection of drivers, grey icons indicate the driver is not in use, and green means the driver is activated.

7. Install Tweak Tools

Do you like to customize your Desktop ? If yes, you need this tweak tools, Ubuntu has provide some tools that lets you to customize your desktop to your own liking. There are two tools you can use to customize your desktop its Gnome Tweak Tools and Unity Tweak Tools. Gnome is for who use Ubuntu Gnome Environment and Unity is for who use the Unity as its desktop environment.

To install those tweak tools, use this following command :

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool unity-tweak-tool

8. Install Video and Audio Codecs

If you want to play some music or watch some movies, you can do it, but only some format are playable on Ubuntu before you install the additional codecs. For example you can’t play MP3 files before install the codec first. So to install additional codecs use this command :

$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

9. Install Google Chrome

Well who doesn’t know Chrome ? Google Chrome is the most popular, fastest, and the most reliable browsers for your Ubuntu, this browser has built-in flash player and have a huge list of extensions and apps.

Here is how to install chrome for Ubuntu :

Chrome 64 bit

$ wget
$ sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

Chrome 32 bit

$ wget
$ sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

10. Install Games and Emulators

Its very recommended to install Steam if you are a gamer, Steam is a gaming platform develop by Valve. Steam is available native for Linux operating system. With steam you can play games that playable on Linux, its still a few games that supported for Linux, but soon game developer will look into the Linux Gamer, because Linux users that use Linux for Gaming is getting bigger and bigger every year. So to install Steam use this simple command :

$ sudo apt-get install steam

Now what if you want to run your Windows application with your Linux ?, you can use Wine, Wine can run Windows Applications without a copy of Microsoft Windows. You can download Wine for free with this command :

$ sudo apt-get install wine
