Most of us in the IT sector need a file compression tool to shrink and open large files.  Please see the following steps to use “RAR” in an ubuntu command line scenario

Installing RAR

  • Open a terminal window and type in:
    • sudo apt-get install rar
    • sudo ln -fs /usr/bin/rar /usr/bin/unrar
  • Go to the  Archive Manager in the Gnome menu under Applications -> Accessories
  • Install Dapper package in order to open the files with the rar extensions.

After installation you will see a choice to open and extract the file to a folder of your choice.
