Elementary OS is another cool Linux distro that based on Ubuntu, Elementary OS focus on it’s user experience and visual design with it’s very minimalist user environment and resemble like mac . Elementary OS have it’s own Desktop Environment called pantheon. Newest version of stable release Elementary OS is Luna 0.2, and there is Elementary OS 0.3 called Freya but it’s still on development.
On this post we will focus on how to install this very minimalist OS, First thing you should do is create bootable disk or create a bootable USB Stick and then boot up from your bootable media and you will get into the first step of the installation.
You will get into Elementary OS Desktop, you can try out Elementary OS first or you can continue installation by clicking Install Elementary OS.
On this step Elementary Installer will ensure you to have at lease 4.4 GB free disk space, plug-in to the power source, and connect your PC to the internet. Internet connection is optional except you want to Download your Elementary OS Updates or Installing Third Party Software.
*Personally I don’t check Download Updates or Install third party software because it will add amount of the installation time.
Then click Continue.
Here you must choose your installation type :
First Option is Install elementary OS alongside them, this option will install elementary OS alongside your previous OS (Windows, Other Distro, etc) and this option will use available free space to make system partition, mount point, and swap. *this option is not available on the screenshot because this tutorial was made using VirtualBox
Second Option is Erase disk and Install elementary OS, this option will delete all your partition then replace everything with elementary OS and elementary OS will automatically make system partition, mount point, and swap.
Third Option is Something Else, I rather choose this option than the other two, with this option you can customize your partition and mount point, for example if you want your /home directory have it’s own partition or you want to increase your swap size.
I’ll select Something Else, then click Continue.
If your hard drive do not have partition table you should click New Partition Table, If not skip this step.
Click New Partition Table, then if you want to continue click Continue.
On this step i’ll just create 2 partition ( / and swap), to create new partition click on free space, then click Add.
First we create partition for mount point root (/) then set size of root partition, lets say we have 20 GB partition, and 1 GB RAM in Megabytes 20 GB is 21474 MB and 1 GB is 1024 MB, to decide size of root partition and swap we should do a simple calculation, recommended Swap size is twice of your RAM so if your RAM is 1 GB then it should be 2 GB (2048 MB).
Lets decide root size :
Total free space – Swap size
21474 – 2048 = 19426
So root size is 19426 MB and Swap 2048 MB.
Let’s change root size on Create Partition window to 19426 MB and change Mount point to /(root), leave other settings as default if you don’t know what to do with those settings, then click Ok.
Now lets add swap partition, click Add and change Use as to swap area, for size just leave it 2048 MB, then click Ok
After partition setup is done, just click Install Now.
While the installation is on progress you can select your time region.
Select your time region by clicking on the map or by typing on textfield below the map, click Continue after select your region.
Then Installer will ask you to choose your keyboard layout, then click Continue.
Next insert your data (like username and password), then click Continue.
After clicking continue, just wait for last installation progress.
And CONGRATULATIONS ! you’ve been install your elementary OS on your system, just click restart and remove your bootable media, and enjoy your new elementary OS, After installing to make your elementary OS load the best experience you should do Things to do After installing elementary OS.
