How to install Minecraft on Ubuntu, Mint, Elementary - 5

Minecraft is a sandbox independent video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson and later developed and published by the Swedish company Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and combat.

On Windows you can install and play Minecraft easily by just installing Java and Download the Minecraft Launcher. On Linux is quietly easy too. So this article shows how to instal Minecraft for Debian based Distribution, but don’t worry the instructions also work for other Linux Distributions as well.

Step 1

Install Java

The first thing to do is download and install Java Runtime, because to run Minecraft you need to install Java Runtime. Its very recommended to Install Oracle Java, but if you found its hard to install Oracle Java you can use OpenJDK. On Ubuntu you can install OpenJDK using the Ubuntu Software Center or you can also use the Synaptic or by using APT. If you need help you can open my previous post about Installing Java on Linux.

Step 2

Download the Minecraft Launcher

The second thing is Download the Minecraft Launcher. Visit Download Minecraft Launcher to download the Launcher.

Now after visiting the website, click Minecraft.jar to download the launcher into your Downloads Folder.

Step 3

Change Minecraft.jar Permissions

Open your file Manager or your terminal and navigate to Minecraft.jar directory. If the file isn’t execute able, then change it by right clicking on the Minecraft.jar and choose properties > Click on permissions tab and Check “allow executing file as program”.

If you are using a terminal, run this command :

chmod +x Minecraft.jar

Step 4

Run the Launcher

You can now open Minecraft.jar in Ubuntu by Double Clicking on the file. If you want to run Minecraft from the command line, you should navigate to the launcher folder and type :

java - jar Minecraft.jar

After few seconds the launcher will show up.

If you have not registered yet, you can click on the register button, then enter your Email or Username and password and then click login.

Now the second window will show up, If you have paid the game you will be able to click Play to play the game, but if not you can only play the demo.

Clicking the Demo will takes you into the Minecraft Game.
